INTRODUCTION 3

Safe and readily available water is important for public health, whether it
is used for drinking, domestic use, food production or recreational
purposes.
Types of water sources
• Surface water(for example ,a lake ,river or reservoir).
• Ground water (for example ,an aquifer).
• Public drinking water provided by the government.

A water facility system can be any location or facility related to the public water
system. Examples include distribution systems, treatment plants, wells, and the
like.

WATER FACILITIES
• A water system facility can be any location or facility related to the public
water system. Examples include distribution systems, treatment plants, wells,
and the like.
• Availability of Water makes about 70% of the earth’s crust. Thus,
only 2% is available to us as fresh water.
• We selected Turangi village, in Kakinada Rural Mandal in
East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh State, India.
• Water is supplied by government in that area .
Most of the people preferred water from government supply for both
drinking and household purposes.
PURIFICATION OF WATER
5

• Different purification methods follows to purify water in that area

• Coagulation:
Coagulation or chemical precipitation in water treatment is done to expedite the process of sedimentation
and is achieved by adding chemicals, called coagulants, like aluminium sulphate, ferrous sulphate, ferric
chloride etc.
• Sedimentation:
Sedimentation is the process of separation of suspended particles heavier than water from gravitational
settling
• Clarification:
Clarification is an important stage in the treatment of water or wastewater because it removes suspended
particles by gravity settling resulting in a cleared liquid effluent.
• Chlorination:
Chlorination is the process of adding chlorine to drinking water to kill parasites, bacteria, and viruses.
Different processes can be used to achieve safe levels of chlorine in drinking water
6

• Filtration:
During filtration, the clear water passes through filters that have
different pore sizes and are made of different materials (such as
sand, gravel, and charcoal). Gravel bed consists of 3-6 mm, 6-20
mm, 20-40mm, 40-60mm different sizes of gravels form top to
bottom in a Gravity filer.
• Reverse 0smosis
Reverse Osmosis is a water treatment process that removes
impurities using a semi-permeable membrane.

PROBLEMS FACED BY PEOPLE

• Irregular supply of water in some regions.
• Quality of water in some regions.
• Decreasing the supply of water by government mainly in summer.
• Changing of water color and taste of water .
• Leaking of taps .
• Lack of good infrastructure of pipes and storage tanks .

SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED SOLUTION

1. Leaking taps and poor 1. Increase investment in water

infrastructure for pipes and infrastructure to expand access to safe
storage tanks . drinking water.
2. Change of water color and 2. Regular testing and monitoring of water
taste . sources is essential to ensure
compliance with health and safety
standards.
3. Lack of community 3. Water managers can engage with the
involvement. community through public meetings,
forums, or town halls to gather input
and feedback on water management
decisions
9

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED SOLUTION

4. Water storage 4. In times of water shortage or

contamination, communities may struggle
to provide safe drinking water to residents.
