EDUCATION
Drug dependence has become a
severe social problem for its adverse
effects among various sectors of the
society. Its interference is not only among
the youngsters but also among men and
women of desperate social, financial or
economic characters. It is definitely
harmful since it breaks down character
leading to criminally and even suicide.
“Researches showed that drug dependence
is more common in urban centers than in
rural areas. It does not mean, however, that
rural inhabitants are more psychologically
stable than exposed to drugs and therefore
more likely to use them.”
PENALTY

6 months 6 yrs and 1 day to


rehabilitation in the 12 yrs and fine

CULTIVATION OR CULTURE OF PLANTS
CLASSIFIED AS DANGEROUS DRUGS
PENALTY:

1. Life imprisonment to death and a fine from 5000,00 to 10,000.00 to any person planting, cultivating or
culturing marijuana, opium poppy or any plant regardless of quantity.

2. The land or portions thereof/ or greenhouses on which any of said plants is cultivated or cultured.

3. Maximum penalty provided for under this section to any person, who organizes, manages, or acts as a
financier of any illegal activities.

4. The penalty of 12 years and 1 yr to 20yrs of imprisonment.

5. A fine ranging from 100,00 to 500,00 pesos to any person, acting as a protector/coddler of any violator of
DRUG
It is a substance that affects the function of living cells, used in medicine to
diagnose, cure, prevent the occurrence of diseases and disorders and prolong the
life of patients with incurable conditions.

Since 1990, the availability of new and more effective drugs such as
antibiotics, which fight bacterial infections and vaccines, which prevent diseases
caused by bacteria and viruses, has increased the average of Filipino’s life span
from about 60 yrs to 75 yrs. Drugs have vastly improved the quality of life. Today,
drugs have contributed to the eradication of once widespread and sometimes fatal
diseases such as poliomyelitis and smallpox.
DRUG ABUSE
It is a problem which adversely affects our most
precious resource the Filipino youth. Hence, the
Phil. Government through the Dangerous Drug
Board has taken the initiative to prevent the
menace and wide spread of this social epidemic
that will destroy the lives and aspirations of our
youth.
DRUG OVERDOSE

This is a serious matter. Unfortunately, many


adults and teens suffer from its slings. Usually drug
overdose is a mask, hiding other problems such as
insecurity, self loathing, a sense of failure, or deep
un-abiding depression. These problems must also be
addressed in order to prevent the self medication
which so many drug addicts use, from becoming a
dangerous overdose.
GENERAL SYSMPTOMS OF DRUG ABUSE

1. Abrupt changes in school work attendance, quality of work, grades, work output.
2. Unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper
3. Withdrawal from responsibility
4. Change in overall attitude
5. Deterioration of physical appearance and grooming
6. Furtive behavior regarding actions
7. Wearing of sunglasses to hide dilated or constricted pupils
8. Association with drug abusers
9. Unusual borrowing of money from parents or friends
10. Stealing small items.
DEFINITION OF TERMS ABOUT DRUG ABUSE

DRUG – is any chemical substance which affects a person in such a way as to


bring about physiological, emotional or behavior change.

DRUG ABUSE – is the use of chemical substance, licit or illicit which results in
an individual’s physical, mental, emotional and social impairment.

DRUG ADDICTION – a person’s dependence in drug, associated with


narcotics. The term addiction is now being replaced by the term dependence.

DRUG DEPENDENCE – a state of psychological or physical dependence (or


both) on a dangerous drug following administration or use of that drug on a
periodic or continuous basis.
DRUGS AND SUBSTANCES COMMONLY ABUSED
HALLUCINOGENS ( Psychedelics) – drugs capable of provoking changes
of sensation, thinking, self awareness and emotion. Users of this type experiences
alteration of time and space perception, illusion, hallucinations and delusions.
Depending on the dose, felling may vary from clinical to overwhelming and may
also result to “high trip” or “bad trip” on a single individual on different occasions.
Examples are LSD, marijuana and mescaline.
DRUGS AND SUBSTANCES COMMONLY ABUSED

STIMULANTS – (upper or pep pills) – drugs which increase alertness, reduce


hunger and provide a feeling of well-being. Examples are cocaine and amphetamines.

DEPRESSANTS – (downers) – drugs which decrease or depress body


functions and nerve activity (sedatives, hypnotics, tranquilizers).

b. Infectious disease
c. Individuals suffering from severe ailments( with acute unbearable pains)
are likely to become drug dependents.
d. Drug abusers resort to stealing, prostitution and other criminal acts to
support their habit.
e. Taking drugs during pregnancy is very risky ( to mother and the baby).
f. Pot sessions often result to pregnancy (aggravating population problem).

OTHER RELATED PERCEPTIONS ON DRUG ABUSE

1. Drug addicts are concerned merely with the immediate relief and
totally forgetting the fatal side effects thus timely enlightenment o
the harmful effects of drugs should be undertaken.
2. Only the person concerned can cure himself.
3. The habit can be brought to the Lord in prayer.
4. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
5. Drug addicts must be rehabilitated.
ROLE OF THE YOUTH ON DRUG
DETECTION AND PREVENTION

Teenagers resort to drugs for a variety of reasons:

1. For curiosity, due to misinformation for the sake of “experience”.

2. Pakikisama as accepted by the barkada

3. To have feeling of security.

4. To relief from problems- personal, family, school, work and others.

5. To scape from boredom and other problems.


10 WAYS TO SAY NO TO DRUGS

1. Be vocal and just say “NO” and mean it.


2. Project an image of clean living for yourself.
3. Get into sports
4. Choose your friends and influence them positively.
5. Get involved in Community based projects.
6. Join organizations (church, school, community r social) or youth clubs or
form your own drama group.
7. Learn how to manage stress.
8. Join seminars on anti-drug abuse prevention.
9. Talk to your family, listen to the problems of your brothers and sisters.
10. Enhance your talents or skills by taking part in workshops, trainings or
seminars.
COMMUNITY LEADERS’ ADVOCACY TO
PREVENT DRUG ABUSE

Plan and implement social action programs involving young people, civic
group, professionals and religious organizations to improve the community life.
The following activities must be implemented in the community.

1. Parent Education Programs


2. Recreational, Social and Sports Programs.
3. Vocational/ skills Development and Training Programs.
4. Youth Development Program
5. Seminar on Drug Education.
PARTICIPATE AND ASSIST IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RA 6425
ALSO KNOWN AS DANGEROUS DRUG ACT OF 1972 BY:

1. Motivating known drug abusers to undergo treatment and


rehabilitations:
2. Reporting drug pushers, drug maintainers, drug traffickers to
the law enforcement agencies.
3. Encouraging and supporting the establishment of community
guidance clinics for drug users.
4. Helping after-care rehabilitated clients to be accepted back to
their community and involving them in meaningful and
productive activities
5. Helping strengthen the moral and spiritual values of the
discharged clients.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO PROBLEM:

1. Preventive education programs to dissuade users or potential users from


experimenting with illegal drugs and/or continuing to use them.
2. Treatment and rehabilitation programs aimed at facilitating abstinence.
3. Intensified campaigns against illegal drugs and trafficking.
4. Judicial and legislative measures.
5. National, regional and international cooperation to fight illegal drug trafficking and
abuse of dangerous drugs.
6. Some Philippine political figures are talking about drug testing employees of
outsourced call center workers, others are calling for testing university students, and
the government is currently considering drug testing all government employees.
7. Drug information and Action Line (DIAL) was created to receive reports and
complaints related to drug abuse and provide assistance to the public on drug-
related cases.
