Manual Scavenging

Manual scavenging refers to the unsafe removal of human excreta by hand. It began as a caste-based practice, assigning this dangerous work to Dalits. The Indian government has since prohibited manual scavenging and provided rehabilitation programs. However, it remains an ongoing problem due to caste discrimination, lack of law enforcement, exploitation of vulnerable workers, and inadequate alternative livelihood programs. Ending manual scavenging requires using modern equipment instead of human workers, strict and impartial legal actions against violators, education campaigns, and ensuring former manual scavengers have new skills and opportunities.
