What is NFC?

NFC = Near Field Communication

A short-range wireless connectivity technology
 Operates at 13.56MHz
 Based on RFID(Radio Frequency Identification ) technology
 Data transfer rate: up to 424 kbits/second
 Reader & Tag communicate
 Promoted by the NFC-Forum

Comparison with other Wireless Networks
Comparison with other Wireless Networks

Merits of NFC against other wireless networks:

 Quick setup time (<0.1ms )
 Short range distance (up to 10cm)

 Does not require line of site

 Backward compatibility

 Consumer experience
NFC ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES

 ADVANTAGES

 High convenience to the user, because the data exchange is done by

bringing two mobiles together.
 Reduces cost of electronic issuance.
 Secure communication.
 DISADVANTAGES
 The system has the limitation that it can be operated only with
devices under a shortrange that is around 10 cm.
 The data transfer rate is very less at about106kbps, 212
kbps and 424kbps.
NFC Application

Connect Electronic Devices

 Exchange data
 Simple, secure pairing e.g. Bluetooth
Access Information
 Advertisements
 Identification Cards
Mobile transactions
 Contactless payment
 Mobile ticketing
NFC Use Cases

Phone = Keys, ID card, Wallet

Future Work

 Goals: Security, Openness, Interoperability

 Integration with IoT (Internet of Things)
 Enhanced Security Features
 Extended Range and Faster Data Transfer
 NFC in Healthcare Innovation
 NFC in Supply Chain and Logistics
