Unit 5

Data communication is the process of transferring data between two locations or networks. It allows digital data to move between connected devices and networks. A communication system consists of a sender, receiver, transmission medium, set of protocols, and message being transmitted. There are three types of data communication: simplex allows one-way transfer, half-duplex allows two-way transfer but not simultaneously, and full-duplex allows simultaneous two-way transfer. Computer networks can be a personal area network (PAN) covering around 10 meters, a local area network (LAN) connecting devices within an office or building, a metropolitan area network (MAN) interconnecting multiple LANs within a city, or a wide area network (WAN)

What is Data communication

Data communication is the process of transferring data from one place

to another or between two locations. It allows electronic and digital
data to move between two networks.
Communication is defined as a process in which more than one
computer transfers information, instructions to each other and for
sharing resources.
Or in other words,
communication is a process or act in which we can send or receive
data.
Components of Data Communication
A communication system is made up of the following components:
1.Message: A message is a piece of information that is to be transmitted from
one person to another. It could be a text file, an audio file, a video file, etc.
2.Sender: It is simply a device that sends data messages. It can be a computer,
mobile, telephone, laptop, video camera, or workstation, etc.
3.Receiver: It is a device that receives messages. It can be a computer, telephone
mobile, workstation, etc.
4.Transmission Medium / Communication Channels: Communication channels
are the medium that connect two or more workstations. Workstations can be
connected by either wired media or wireless media.
5.Set of rules (Protocol): When someone sends the data (The sender), it should
be understandable to the receiver also otherwise it is meaningless.
Therefore, there are some set of rules (protocols) that is followed by every
computer connected to the internet and they are:
• TCP(Transmission Control Protocol): It is responsible for dividing
messages into packets on the source computer and reassembling the
received packet at the destination or recipient computer. It also makes
sure that the packets have the information about the source of the
message data, the destination of the message data, the sequence in
which the message data should be re-assembled, and checks if the
message has been sent correctly to the specific destination.
• IP(Internet Protocol): Do You ever wonder how does computer
determine which packet belongs to which device. What happens if the
message you sent to your friend is received by your father? Scary Right.
Well! IP is responsible for handling the address of the destination
computer so that each packet is sent to its proper destination.
Type of data communication
As we know that data communication is communication in which we can send or
receive data from one device to another. The data communication is divided into three
types:
1.Simplex Communication: It is one-way communication or we can say that
unidirectional communication in which one device only receives and another device
only sends data and devices uses their entire capacity in transmission. For example,
IoT, entering data using a keyboard, listing music using a speaker, etc.
2.Half Duplex communication: It is a two-way communication or we can say that it is a
bidirectional communication in which both the devices can send and receive data but
not at the same time. When one device is sending data then another device is only
receiving and vice-versa. For example, walkie-talkie.
3.Full-duplex communication: It is a two-way communication or we can say that it is a
bidirectional communication in which both the devices can send and receive data at
the same time. For example, mobile phones, landlines, etc.
Computer Network
PAN(Personal Area Network)

• Personal Area Network is a network arranged within an

individual person, typically within a range of 10 meters.
• Personal Area Network is used for connecting the
computer devices of personal use is known as Personal
Area Network.
• Thomas Zimmerman was the first research scientist to
bring the idea of the Personal Area Network.
• Personal Area Network covers an area of 30 feet.
• Personal computer devices that are used to develop the
personal area network are the laptop, mobile phones,
media player and play stations.
There are two types of Personal Area Network:
• Wired Personal Area Network
• Wireless Personal Area Network
Wireless Personal Area Network: Wireless Personal
Area Network is developed by simply using wireless
technologies such as Bluetooth. It is a low range network.
Wired Personal Area Network: Wired Personal Area
Network is created by using the USB.
LAN(Local Area Network)

• Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to

each other in a small area such as building, office.
• LAN is used for connecting two or more personal
computers through a communication medium such as
twisted pair, coaxial cable, etc.
• It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such
as hubs, network adapters, and ethernet cables.
• The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local
Area Network.
• Local Area Network provides higher security.
LAN DEVICES:
Wired LAN(ex: Ethernet-Hub, switch)
Wired LAN(ex: Wi – Fi)
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)

• A metropolitan area network is a network that covers a larger geographic area by

interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger network.
• Government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens and private industries.
• In MAN, various LANs are connected to each other through a telephone exchange line.
• It has a higher range than Local Area Network(LAN).
MAN Devices:
Switch/Hub : for establishing a local area network
Routers/Bridges : to connect two LAN
WAN(Wide Area Network)

• A Wide Area Network is a network that extends over a large geographical area such as
states or countries.
• A Wide Area Network is quite bigger network than the LAN.
• A Wide Area Network is not limited to a single location, but it spans over a large
geographical area through a telephone line, fibre optic cable or satellite links.
• The internet is one of the biggest WAN in the world.
• A Wide Area Network is widely used in the field of Business, government, and education.
Examples Of Wide Area Network:
• Mobile Broadband: A 4G network is widely used across a
region or country.
• A telecom company is used to provide the internet
services to the customers in hundreds of cities by
connecting their home with fiber.
• Private network: A bank provides a private network that
connects the 44 offices. This network is made by using the
telephone leased line provided by the telecom company.
