CONSEGUENES OF

DEFORSTATION

What is deforestation?
• Deforestation means clearing of forests and using that
land for other purposes, i.e. for industries set up or
making building for habitation. The causes of
deforestation may be: - Procuring land for cultivation.
- Building houses and factories.
Consequences of deforestation
• Deforestation increases the temperature and pollution level on earth.
• It increases the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
• The ground water level also gets lowered.
• Deforestation disturbs the balance in nature.
• If cutting of trees continues, then the rainfall and soil fertility will
decrease.
• There will be increased chance of natural calamities such as floods and
droughts.
CO 2

• Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.

• If there are fewer trees it would mean that less carbon
dioxide will be taken hence there will be more CO2 in the
atmosphere.
• This will result in global warming as CO2 traps the heat rays
reflected by the earth.
• The increase in temperature on earth disturbs the water
cycle and may result in less rainfall. This could cause
droughts.
DESERTIFICATION
• Deforestation is a major cause which leads to the
change in soil properties. Physical properties of
the sol get affected by plantation and vegetation.
Fewer trees result in more soil erosion. Removal
of the top layer of the soil exposes the lower, hard
and rocky layers.
DESERTIFICATION
• This soil has less humus and is less fertile.
Gradually the fertile lands gets converted into
deserted. It is called desertification.
