History
Cambridge is a university city, non-metropolitan district
and the county town of Cambridgeshire, England. It is
located on the River Cam approximately 55 miles north
of London. The city has a rich history dating back to the
Bronze Age, with archaeological evidence of settlement
in the area as early as that time. The first town charters
were granted in the 12th century, although modern city
status was not officially conferred until 1951.
Cambridge became an important trading center during
the Roman and Viking ages. The University of
Cambridge, which was founded in 1209, is one of the
oldest and most prestigious universities in the world.
The city’s skyline is dominated by several college
buildings, along with the spire of the Our Lady and the
English Martyrs Church, and the chimney of
Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
The Libraries
There are over 100 libraries in Cambridge,
including the Cambridge University Library. The
library is located on West Road and is the largest
library in Cambridge. It is open to the public and
offers a wide range of services, including borrowing
books, access to online collections, and training
opportunities.
In addition to the University Library, there are many
other libraries in Cambridge, including affiliated
libraries, departmental and faculty libraries, college
libraries, and various other specialist libraries
associated with the university. Each library has its

The college system
Cambridge University is a collegiate university
consisting of 31 autonomous colleges. The colleges are
responsible for admitting students, pastoral care, and
organizing small group tuition sessions called
supervisions. Each college has its own internal
procedures and unique characteristics.
The university is divided into six schools, each of which
is an administrative grouping of faculties and other
institutions. The schools are Arts and Humanities,
Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Humanities and
Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Technology.
Each school is headed by a School Board and is
responsible for the organization and management of the
faculties and departments within it.

Cambridge University also has a vibrant social and cultural life, with numerous
