Digestive System

The digestive system breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates waste. It is made up of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. The digestive system works through digestion, absorption, and elimination to break down food, extract nutrients, and remove undigested waste from the body.

Digestive

System
Functions of Digestive System
• Break down food into smaller
portions
• Absorb nutrients to be
transported to the
bloodstream
• Elimination process of waste
materials
Parts of Digestive System
Parts of the Digestive System
Mouth – is the beginning of digestive system, the
entrance way of the foods.

Our mouth is composed of

teeth, tongue, gums and hard and soft palates.
Each kind of teeth can be categorized into:
• Incisors – for cutting
• Canine- for tearing
• Premolars and Molar- for pounding food
Esophagus and Stomach
Esophagus - is a muscular tube that bring
chewed food in the stomach

Peristalsis -is the muscular contraction that

transports chewed food into the stomach.

Stomach - is large J-shaped organ

that receives chewed food from the
esophagus.
Small and Large Intestines
Small intestine or the semicolon- it has
villi (a fingerlike projections) that aid in the
absorption of nutrients from the food we
eat.

Large intestine or colon - is where

absorption of water happens.
Rectum and Anus
Rectum – is temporarily area that holds
the fecal material.

Anus- is the final part of digestive track,

and considered as the exit point of feces.

Feces- are solid undigested waste remains

after the water is absorbed, after some time,
will be removed through the anus.
The main Function of Digestive System
Digestion- is the process of breaking down
food so that the body will absorb food nutrients.
Digestion happens
- from mouth to the stomach
Digestion
• It involves mechanical and chemical digestion.
• The mechanical phase of digestion involves breaking
down of food through biting, tearing and grinding of
food into smaller pieces making it easier to swallow.
• The chemical phases of digestion involves the use of
different enzymes that break down large molecules
such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
2. Absorption -
happens in the Intestines

• The chyme or digested food that

reaches the small intestine have
biomolecules.
• Food nutrients move through the
thin lining of the small intestine
and through the wall of the blood
vessels into the blood stream.
• The blood will then carry the
nutrients to the different body
parts.
3. Elimination
happens in the Intestines

• The chime with undigested materials will then

move from small intestine to the large intestine.
• The water in the undigested residue is removed
through the thin lining of the large intestine into
the blood vessels.
• Feces- are solid undigested waste remains
after the water is absorbed, after some time,
will be removed through the anus.
Good Eating Habits and Taking Care of
the Digestive System
1. Relax while eating your meals.
2. Eat at the right time and do not skip meals.
3. Chew your food slowly and properly.
4. Eat a balanced diet.
5. Lessen and regulate your intake of sweets.
6. Take plenty of water everyday and eat fruits and
vegetables.
Let us Review
The digestive system - is the
system for digesting,
absorbing and eliminating
foods and liquids from the
food we eat.
Digestion
It is the process of breaking

will absorb food nutrients.
Absorbing
It is the process of extracting
and carrying nutrients and
water into the various parts of
our body.
Elimination-
The process of removing
undigested foods and
undigested water from food.
