IPC BitSchool Intro

This document provides an overview of an introductory course on oil and gas drilling bits. The course covers the fundamentals of different types of drill bits, including roller cone bits, PDC bits, impregnated and natural diamond bits, IADC dull grading systems, and bit selection guides. It introduces common drill bit types and subcategories, describes early drill bit designs and their limitations, and summarizes the module on drill bit introductions.

What is Drill Bit ?
• A drill bit is what actually cuts into the rock when
drilling an oil or gas well. Located at the tip of the
drillstring, below the drill collar and the drill pipe, the
drill bit is a rotating apparatus that usually consists of
two or three cones made up of the hardest of materials
(usually steel, tungsten carbide, and/or synthetic or
natural diamonds) and sharp teeth that cut into the
rock and sediment below.

6
Drill Bit Types.
Drill bits can be divided in two main categories & sub categories

Roller Cone Bits

Fixed Cutters Bits
(Tricone)

PDC Bits
Steel Tooth Bit

Impregnated Bits
Insert bits
Natural Diamond Bits

TSP Bits
7
Bit Types
Tungsten Carbide Insert (TCI) PDC Impreg

Steel Tooth (ST) Natural Diamond

8
Early Bit Design
• 1900 – And This Was
History…
• Successfully drilled soft
formations but incurred
excessive wear
• Would not drill hard rock
• Commonly known as
fishtail bit

9
Early Roller cone Bits
1909, Howard Hughes, Sr.
introduced the two cone
rolling bit and the
revolution in drilling began.

The Hughes Tool Co. built on

that technological
foundation to make many
more improvements to the
cutting structures and
bearing seals.

10
Early Diamond Bits
• the introduction of the first
surface set diamond bit for
an oilfield application in
1952.
• In that same light of Howard
Hughes Sr. the Diamond /
impregnated bit business
was revolutionized by Frank
and George Christensen
• This first diamond bit was
desing for core drilling.

11
Early PDC Bits
• Christensen introduction of
the first PDC bit in 1976 new
bit and the revolution in
drilling began.

• In that same light of Howard

Hughes Sr. the PDC bit
business was revolutionized
by Frank and George
Christensen

12
Drill Bit Companies.
• Baker Hughes (Hughes Christensen)

• – Schlumberger (Smith Bits)

• – NOV (ReedHycalog Bits)

• – Halliburton (HDBS Bits)

• – Ulterra Drilling Technologies

• – Varel

• – etc

Module Summary
In this module, we discussed and covered fa
topics:

• How to define drill bits.

• Describe Type of drill bits and there sub categories.
• History of drill bits the drilling bits revaluation.

In the next module, we will discuss Diamond (PDC)

Bits.
