EE 8314: Power Electronics Circuits
Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to enable student to identify types,
construction, principle of operation and application of phase
controller rectifiers and chopper circuits

Course Credit:
Core Course with 8 credits

Pre-requisites:
Basics of Power Electronics - EE 8305
Electrical power system analysis – EE 8208
EE 8314: Power Electronics Circuits
Mode of Delivery : 4 hours and 30 minutes lecture and/or tutorial per
week
Mode of assessments: Continuous Assessment – 40%
Test 1 -15% (6th week)
Test 2 -15% (10th week)
Quizzes -5% + Assignments -5%
: University Examination - 60%

1.Establish control power flow on electrical machines and equipment
2.Analyse operational characteristics of choppers
3.Analyse operation of phase controlled rectifier
4.To be able to protect the power electronics devices and circuits against
abnormal conditions
EE 8314: Course Contents
1. Introduction to Power Electronics circuits
Definitions, Applications and types of control
2. Uncontrolled Rectifiers
Single phase half wave converters, single phase full wave converters, three phase
uncontrolled rectifiers
3. Phase controlled Rectifiers
Principle of Phase Control, Full-wave converters, Single-phase Full-wave converter,
Single-phase Two-pulse Converters with Discontinues Load Current, Three-phase
Converter Systems using Diodes, Three-phase Thyristor Converter circuit, Effect of
Source Impedance on the Performance of Converters, Dual converters.
EE 8314: Course Contents
4. Choppers
Principle of Chopper Operation, Control Strategies, Step-up Choppers, Types of
Chopper Circuits, Steady State Time-domain analysis of Type-A Chopper, Thyristor
Chopper circuits, Multiphase Choppers.

5. Protection of devices and circuits


Cooling and heat sinks, protection against over current and over voltages,
temperature and mechanical damage, Snubber circuit.
