outside of class
How Much Time Should I Spend…
• Research suggests that students should spend approximately 2-3
hours, per credit hour, studying in order to be successful in their
courses.

• That’s 6-9 hours for a 3-credit hour course per week; 3 hours of student
engagement per week for a traditional 15-week course or 6 hours per week
for a 7-week course.

• This time may be spent on discussions, readings and lectures,

study and research, and assignments.

are spending your time.

Elements of a
Comprehensive Time-
Management Plan
A Good Time-Management Plan
Should Include:

• A long-range plan for the entire academic term that identifies

deadlines for reports and papers due toward the end of the
term.

• A mid-range plan for the upcoming month and week.

• A short-range plan for the following day.

A Good Time-Management Plan
Should Include:
• Reserve time to take care of
the unexpected.

• A balance of work and

recreation.

• Flexibility.
Procrastination
• “Why do today what can be put off to tomorrow?”

• The result is a perpetual pattern of postponing what

needs to be done until the last possible moment, then
rushing anxiously to get it done by sacrificing quality,
getting it only partially done, or not getting it done at all.
Common Myths That
Promote
Procrastination
“I work better under pressure.”
• FALSE

• Nervous energy can make people work faster but, it does not
mean they are working more effectively and producing work of
higher quality.

• The focus becomes how fast the job can be done rather than
how well it can be done.
“Studying in advance is a waste of time
because you will forget the material by
test time.”
• FALSE

• Distributed (or spread-out) studying is more effective than

massed (or crammed) studying for producing deeper learning
and stronger memory.

• Waiting until the last minute adds performance pressure and

anxiety by leaving no time to correct mistakes or getting help,
or even work around unforeseen events (e.g., the cat ate your
paper).
Psychological Causes of
Procrastination
• Fear of failure

• Perfectionism

• Fear of success

• Indecisiveness
Combating Procrastination
• Make the work meaningful and manageable.

• Make the start of the work as inviting or appealing as

possible.

• Organization, location, and momentum matters.

• Adjust the sequence of work tasks to intercept

procrastination at times when it’s most likely to take place.
Remember!
• A good time-management plan should help you:

• Stress less,

• Learn more, and

• Earn better grades

• It should also help you attain and maintain balance in your life.
