Section II: School Library Media Center Philosophy/ Mission Statement Purpose

Philosophy
Our media center is designed to support Alpharetta students and staff in achieving their future goals while fostering a
welcoming environment that promotes social-emotional wellness.

Mission
The mission of the Alpharetta High School Media Center is to build a foundation for lifelong learning through
information literacy; to instill a love of literature and reading; and to provide a variety of resources which support and
enhance the curriculum.
Section III: School Library Media Center Services Overview
Services Offered
• Technology Access: Every classroom is equipped with Chromebooks for students, and lending services are available for students
needing them at home. Teachers receive laptops for year-round use.
• Media Specialist Support: The Media Specialist serves as a resource for students and teachers, aiding in resource utilization,
collaborating on lessons, and evaluating information.
• Student Resources: Student IDs function as library cards, enabling easy resource management. Printing services are available, with
specific costs for black and white and color prints. Reservations for the media center or computer labs can be made through Google
Forms.
• Inclusivity: Books in different languages for varied reading levels are offered, and orientation sessions on research skills are
provided annually. Students with disabilities are encouraged to volunteer, fostering an inclusive environment.
Circulation Policy
• Book Borrowing: Students can borrow up to two books for two weeks, with options to renew. There are fines for overdue books, and
students must return borrowed materials by the end of the school year. Seniors must resolve any library obligations to receive their
diploma.
• Teacher Borrowing: Teachers have an unlimited borrowing privilege without fines but must return materials if leaving the school.
Scheduling Policy
• Accessibility: The media center is open from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a reservation system for classes and individual student
computer use.
• Resource Coordination: The Media Specialist collaborates with teachers to ensure necessary resources are available for a seamless
learning experience.
Ethics and Legal Principles:
• Student-Centric Approach: Soliciting student suggestions for library acquisitions and ensuring privacy
for borrowed materials.
• Technology Policies: Management of website access and technology use in alignment with district
guidelines. Privacy maintained unless there are concerns about student safety.
• Acceptable Use Policy
• Board Media Center Policy

Assessment:
• The evaluation of the media center highlights its proactive approach in meeting the evolving needs of
students and teachers, aligning with contemporary educational and technological demands. The provision
of technology both within and outside the classroom is crucial for 21st-century learning. However, there's
an opportunity to further enhance support by introducing an online platform for student queries,
acknowledging the importance of virtual accessibility in addition to physical resources. This suggestion
resonates with the idea that libraries need to adapt, recognizing that not all students are solely present
physically but also virtually. Overall, the center's services strongly echo the philosophy and mission by
fostering an inclusive and resourceful environment that caters to all students' needs.
Section IV: Facilities

The Alpharetta High School Media Center is a multifunctional

space that caters to various activities such as studying, group
work, and presentations. It offers ample seating, bookshelves,
computers, and a large circulation desk, accommodating both
students and larger gatherings. The room is well-lit with natural
light and equipped with technology such as Smart TVs and
projectors for collaborative projects and presentations. It also
includes glass-enclosed focus rooms for supervised group work.
Access to printing facilities and a controlled climate ensures a
comfortable environment. While available during lunch,
scheduled classes take priority to manage traffic flow effectively.
The design emphasizes accessibility with lower bookshelves,
allowing all students to easily access materials.
Alpharetta High School's library leverages multiple online
platforms, including Destiny, Sora, and MackinVIA, providing a
vast range of resources from books to articles, supporting various
learning styles. These platforms offer targeted searches, access to
ebooks, audiobooks, and diverse educational materials. Teachers
also benefit from specialized curriculum resources like the Gale
District Virtual Reference Library and Raider-TekTeacher Video
