Dela Cruz, E. - Biotic and Abiotic Factors in The Ecosystem

The document discusses biotic and abiotic factors in ecosystems. It defines an ecosystem as a community of interacting organisms and their environment. Biotic factors refer to living organisms like producers, consumers, and decomposers that interact within an ecosystem. Abiotic factors are non-living environmental components such as sunlight, air, water, soil, and temperature. Examples of ecosystems in the Philippines include rice fields, pastures, forests, caves, rivers, ponds, mangrove swamps, and coral reefs. Living things within an ecosystem interact with each other and their physical surroundings.

Biotic & Abiotic Factors

in the Ecosystem
What is an
Ecosystem?
Ecosystem
 An ecosystem is a community
of interacting organisms and
their environment.
 Living things interact with
each other and also with
non-living things like soil,
water and air.
Ecosystem can be……

small Medium LARGE

BIOTIC FACTOR
Biotic Factors

Bio” means lfe and “ic” means

like
Living organisms that shapes
their environment.
Categories of Biotic Factors
What is the difference between
producers, consumers, and
decomposers?
Producers
 Plants are producers.
 Also called “autotrophs”.
 They make their own food,
which creates energy for
them to grow, reproduce and
survive.
Consumers
 Also called “heterotrophs”.
 Cannot make their own food and rely on other organisms for their food.

Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores

Plant eaters Meat eaters Eat both plants and meat.
Decomposers
 Earths major recyclers
 Organisms that break down waste and dead organisms
while returning the raw materials back to the
ecosystem.
ABIOTIC FACTOR
Major Abiotic
Factors in the
Environment
Sunlight
 The sun provides the warmth and
light and is the energy source for
almost all ecosystems on Earth.
 Sunlight powers the photosynthesis
of plants which are the main
producers in terrestrial ecosystems.
Air / Atmosphere
 The atmosphere provide living
things with oxygen.
 The atmosphere consists 78%
Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, !%
Carbon Dioxide, and other gases.
 It protects organisms from
certain harmful rays from the
sun.
Wind
 Many plants use the wind to
disperse seeds overly actively
long distances.
 Important in the formation of
rain as it speeds up evaporation
and transpiration.
Soil
 Habitat for terrestrial animals
 Medium for plant growth
 Provides water and nutrients for plants
and is a home for many organisms.
 Filters water
Water  Habitat for aquatic organisms
 An organism’s survival depends
on water in order to grow and
reproduce.
 Besides providing people,
animals and plants with water, it
also moves things like nutrients,
pathogens and sediment in and
out of aquatic ecosystems.
Temperature
 The Earth’s surface has different
temperatures in different areas.
 Some animals and plants can bear
extreme cold, and some survive
well in moderate temperature
ranges.
 Temperature also likely to affect
the nature of species interactions by
changing resource requirements .
