Types of Communicative Style
Speech style is a communicative style which
portrays how a language is characterized in terms
of degree of formality. Presented below are the
different types of communicative styles.
1.Intimate- This style of conversation is use between people
who know each other well. Sometimes, the speaker only
uses a few words to be able to convey his/her message to
the listener. Non-verbal communication like facial
expressions and gestures are used in the communicative
style.
Example:
Telling your loved ones that you love them
Sharing your fears and problems with your
parents or bestfriend
Parents talking about their family goals
2. Casual- It is an informal kind of communicative style
that is often used with friends or family members. We
use casual communication when we text, call, or chat
with someone who is close to us. The speech is not
prepared ahead of time. In casual conversation, slang
words and colloquialism may be used. Grammar is
simplified in this type of communication.
Example:
• Wassup? (What’s up)
• Nope. (No)
• Watcha gonna do? (What are you going to do)
3. Consultative- Polite words are used in the consultative
communicative style. We use the standard rules of grammar
when speaking in consultative communicative stye. This is
often characterized by the speaker giving background
information about the topic as the listener participates in the
conversation and gives the feedback about it.
Example:
Reciting in class
Talking to your teachers or school administrators
Regular classroom discussions
Doctor-patient
Lawyer-client
Counselor- client
Formal- Formal speeches are straightforward speeches. It is
used in speaking to large groups and is impersonal in nature.
Speaker must frame whole sentences ahead before they are
delivered. It avoids using slang terminologies and uses formal
English. Language is comparatively rigid and has a set, agreed-
upon vocabulary structured complex sentences and noun
phrases.
Examples:
• Meetings Speeches
• Corporate meeting Interview SONA
• Welcome address Announcements
• Orations Scholarly books/

5. Frozen- This communicative style is prepared beforehand. This
type of communicative style rarely or never changes. It is “frozen”
in time and content. It is generally used in a very formal setting. This
is the most formal communicative style for a respectful situation. It
has a fixed and static language and uses long sentences with a good
command of grammar. Often, there is almost no interaction; if
there is interaction, it is formulaic and symbolic.
