Introduction
What is Communication?
• Sharing of information, ideas, and messages between two or more
people.
What is Local Communication?
• Being able to communicate with the members of your local
area.
What is Global Communication?
• The development and sharing of information, through
verbal and non-verbal messages, in international
settings and contexts.
What is
Culture?
• According to Martin & Nakayama (2010),
culture is defined as the “learned patterns
and attitudes shared by a group of people.
• Geert Hofstede (1984), a noted social
psychologist, said that culture is “the
programming of the mind.”
What do you mean by multicultural settings?
• Multicultural refers to a society that contains
several cultural or ethnic groups. People live
alongside one another, but each cultural group
does not necessarily have engaging interactions
with each other.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
• Cultural diversity is about appreciating
that society is made up of many
different groups with different
interests, skills, talents and needs.
INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
• Intercultural communication is a
symbolic, interpretive, transactional,
contextual process, in which people
from different cultures create shared
meanings. (Lustig & Koester,
2007:46)
How do we connect Intercultural
Communication in Local & Global
Communication in Multicultural Settings??
• Understanding cultural differences
• Building relationships
• Enhancing cooperation
• Bridging the gap
• Resolving conflicts
How do we connect Intercultural
Communication in Local & Global
Communication in Multicultural Settings??
It plays a vital role in promoting
understanding, respect, and harmony among
individuals from diverse backgrounds. It
connects people as neighbors rather than
strangers, fostering a sense of unity in our
global village.
Forms of Intercultural
Communication
• Interracial Communication - communicating with people from
different races.
• Interethnic Communication - interacting with people from
different ethnic origin.
• International Communication - communicating between
representatives from different nations.
• Intracultural Communication - interacting with members of the
same racial or ethnic group or co-culture.
Communication Styles
(Gamble & Gamble, 2008)
• High-context Communication - tradition-linked
communication system which adheres strongly to
being indirect.
• Low-context Communication - system that works
on straightforward communication.
Potential Areas for Misinterpretation in Intercultural
Communication
AJ Schuler (2003)

Miscommunication in a cross-cultural
setting can be minimized if one is aware of the
different cultures in each areas wherein
misinterpretation can occur.
Potential Areas for Misinterpretation in Intercultural
Communication
AJ Schuler (2003)
• Opening and Closing conversations – Opening a
conversation involves initiating contact and setting the
tone, while closing it involves bringing the interaction
to an end in a polite and conclusive manner.
• Taking turns during conversations – it is the practice
of individuals taking alternating speaking roles.
• Interrupting – occurs when one person interjects or
speaks out of turn, disrupting the current speaker.
Potential Areas for Misinterpretation in Intercultural
Communication
AJ Schuler (2003)
• Using silence – it can be interpreted in many ways
depending on the culture someone is interacting in.
• Using appropriate topics of conversation –
appropriateness of topics can be misinterpreted in a
conversation depending on the situation or culture that one
is in.
Potential Areas for Misinterpretation in Intercultural
Communication
AJ Schuler (2003)
• Using humor – humor can be a double-edged sword, especially
in intercultural communication where potential areas of
misinterpretation are numerous.
• Knowing how much to say – in some culture, being direct and
straightforward is valued, while in others, being indirect and
polite is preferred.
• Sequencing elements during a conversation – in intercultural
communication, different cultures have different expectations
about how conversations should be sequenced.
How to Improve Intercultural
Communication Competence (Gamble &
Gamble, 2008)
• Recognize the validity and differences of
communication styles among people.

• Learn to eliminate personal biases and

prejudices.
• Strive to acquire communication skills necessary
in a multicultural world.
Recognize the validity and differences
of communication styles among
people.

When meeting someone for the first

time, there are 3 things to do:
1. Ask Question
2. Observe Reaction
3. Listen Actively
Learn to eliminate personal biases and
prejudices

To avoid decision-making biases:

1. Be humble
2. Question your opinions
3. Increase your knowledge of other people
4. Stay motivated and look after yourself
5. Take time to become aware of your
emotions.
Strive to acquire communication skills
necessary in a multicultural world

Communicating effectively in a multicultural

society helps improve relationships by facilitating
two-way conversations, which in turn, foster
mutual understanding between people of diverse
background.
