Medium Voltage Calculation

This document discusses medium voltage calculations for a transformer and motor system. It provides specifications for a 3750 kVA transformer with primary voltage of 34.5 kV and secondary voltage of 4.16 kV. It also provides motor specifications of 150A full load current and 850A locked rotor current. Cable specifications are given for main and motor feeders. The document then outlines the determination of per unit reactances, available fault currents, CT ratings, transformer and motor protection points, and relay selection for the system.

Medium Voltage Calculation

Assume transformer specification above are as follows:

kVA rating ...................................... 3750 kVA
Primary Voltage .............................. 34.5 kV
Secondary Voltage .......................... 4.16 kV wye

Assume motor Specification above as follows:

I fl (motor ) = 150 A
I locked rotor = 850 A

Cable Specifications are as follows:

4160 V, Main Feeder Cable …………..400 sq. mm, 5 kV Copper Conductor
Ampacity ………………………………..665A

4160 V, Motor Feeder ………………..38 sq. mm, 5 kV Copper Conductor

Ampacity ……………………………….190 A
Determination :
a. Find the per unit reactances and the available fault currents
b. CT Rating Selection in every system
c. Transformer Protection Points
d. Motor Protection Points
e. Relay Selection in every system

Solution:

f. Fault Calculation
Assumptions :
Motor Fault Contribution – Negligible
kVA base = 10,000 kVA

xu (utility) = 10 ,000 kVA/ 1,000,000

xu (utility) = 0.01

xt (transformer) = (0.06) (10,000)/3750 = 0.16 p.u

Total p.u. reactance

x total = xu + xt = 0.17 p.u.
The Base Current
34.5 kV.......................Ib = 10,000kVA/(1.732 x 34.5kV) = 167.35 A
4.16 kV.......................Ib = 10,000kVA/(1.732 x 4.16kV) = 1387.85 A

The Available Fault Current (3 Phase Fault)

34.5 kV.......................If = 167.35 / 0.01 = 16735 A
4.16 kV.......................If = 1387.85/ 0.17 = 8614 A

b. CT RATING SELECTION :
Full Load amperes:
34.5 kV.......................Ifl = 3750 / 1.732 (34.5) = 62.75 A
4.16 kV......................Ifl = 3750 / 1.732 (4.16) = 520.4 A

CT ratio to be used are :

34.5 kV...................... 150 : 5 CTR = 30
4.16 kV ................... 1000 : 5 CTR = 200
Motor ........................ 250 : 5 CTR = 50
c. Transformer Protection Points
PEC Rule :
Maximum Overcurrent Device (if Breaker) is 600% of Ifl if the primary voltage is over 600V
I (PEC) = Ifl
34.5 kV........................ 6 (62.75) = 376.53 A

d. Motor Protection Points

Overload....................... I overload = 1.15 (Ifl) = 1.15 (150) = 172.5 A
Assuming Ifl of the Motor is 150 A

e. Relay Selection
i. HV Winding
Relay Current = 1.5 (62.75) / 30 = 3.1278
Time Limit Range = 1.5 - 12 A
Relay Tap to be used = 3 A

ii. LV Winding
Relay Current = 1.5 (520) / 200 = 3.9 A
Time Limit Range = 1.5 - 12 A
Relay Tap to be used = 4 A

iii. Motor

a. Relay Current = 1.15 (150) / 50 = 3.45 A

Time Limit Range = 1.5 - 12 A
Relay Tap to be used = 3 A

b. Instantaneous Unit
Relay Current = 850 /50 = 17 A
Instantaneous Unit Range 10 - 80 A
Relay Tap to be used = 20A
