Moving to an Online Learning Space
Learners and teachers alike are expected to prepare for an
online conference as they would for an ordinary class
session, but one thing is for sure:

Prepare to commit time to the course

There is a myth that distance education courses are not as

time-consuming as traditional courses. Even though you
can complete your work from the comfort of your home,
you still need to be prepared to dedicate anywhere from
four to 15 hours a week to every course you take or
facilitate. Below are some guidelines and tips to help
promote an online learning space conducive to learning.

2
Preparing for an Online Conference

1. Learners are expected to prepare for an online conference 15

minutes before the scheduled time.

2. Inform your family or roommates about your schedule ahead of

time, so that they can also help make sure your session goes
smoothly and without disturbances.

3. Check if your internet connection is slow or intermittent. Make

sure to inform your teacher immediately if that is the case.
3
4.Find an area where you can concentrate, somewhere
with less noise so you can focus on the session.

5.Being in front of a PC or a device will be quite a

challenge for today’s generation of learners, as there
are many ways they might get distracted during a
session through numerous apps. Close all programs or
apps that are not necessary or needed prior to
starting the online conference.

4
a. For online conferences where learners will be using webcams, they
are to make sure that their background is neat and free of clutter.
They should be wearing an attire that follows the school’s prescribed
dress code.

b. For online conferences where learners will be using screen-sharing,

they are to prepare beforehand to make sure that their desktop will
be organized, free of clutter and of files that contain personal
information that may be seen while they are sharing their screen.

5
Decorum and Etiquette During the Conference

1. Learners are expected to compose themselves in the same manner as they

would inside a classroom – to allot their full attention to the session and to act
in a professional manner.

2. Teachers will have different or varying rules of how to go about the session.
Always keep this in mind.

3. Keep your microphones muted unless instructed otherwise.

4. Make use of the chat to raise points and ask questions. It will be up to the
teacher to facilitate.

6
5. Learners can also set their status to let
their teacher know if there are any
questions or additional input they would
like to share. (see fig 1.)

6. Do not be disruptive towards the

session. Observe respect and be
responsive.

7. With online communication, it’s

important to understand people might Fig 1. Different status
available to participants
misconstrue what you said, no matter how
carefully you composed it. So here are
some more core rules of Netiquette.
7
Communication and collaboration

1. Collaboration between fellow learners is

always welcome and encouraged but
always think (even twice) before you
speak.
2. Be sure to carefully re-read and
understand what you will be sending in
order to ensure that you are not
misunderstood by anyone
3. Avoid cluttering your messages with
excessive emphasis (stars, arrows,
exclamations)
8
4. Carefully review and read materials that you receive electronically
before responding.

5. If you are responding to a message, either include the relevant part

of the original message in your message, or make sure to refer to
the original's contents to avoid confusion.

6. Be specific and clear, especially when asking questions; If your

messages can be typed in UPPER and lower case, please use the
two appropriately instead of all UPPERCASE characters. This gives
the appearance of shouting and makes the message less
readable.

9
In time, you will know yourself as well as your learners more and
develop your own set of good online education habits. Never be
afraid to ask for help for to ask is to be brave and to pretend to
know everything is the luxury of fools. As always, do not forget to
incorporate our 6 C’s and enjoy the journey!
