WHERE DO I BEGIN
GETTING STARTED

THIS IS A FORMAL AND SCHOLARLY REPRESENTATION OF THE RESEARCH YOU HAVE


GATHERED TO SUPPORT YOUR HYPOTHESIS
• The assignment requires a minimum of 2 scholarly sources per Team Member – this means peer reviewed
journals and not popular culture magazines (Time, Scientific American, etc.)
• You may use pop culture magazines as additional sources of information
GETTING STARTED ON THE LITERATURE
REVIEW
STEP 1 – THE DATABASE
• In the University Library click on the Databases link on the left side of the Home page
• Select EBSCOhost
• Login using your EUID and password
• Select Academic Search Complete
STEP 2 - KEY WORDS

• Select Advanced Search


• Type in 1-3 keywords that are included in your research question and/or hypothesis
• You may use the qualifier “And” or use a combination of “And” and “Or”
• Example: Trauma in main box, then AND: childhood ; AND: interventions in the other 2 boxes

• Refine as you go
STEP 3 - SELECTING YOUR RESEARCH

• Find 8-10 titles that look like they could apply to your survey question
• Review the abstract before you open the article
• If you have to pay for the article it is ok to just use the abstract
• Be sure you keep the full reference
APA FORMAT OF THE REFERENCES AND
CITATIONS
• All references MUST be cited in the paper. All sources mentioned in the paper must be on the reference page.
• References
• Belongs on a separate page with the heading References – this heading is NOT in bold type.
• Examples:
• Journal Article
• Author(s) (year). Title of the article. Journal Title , vol (issue), pages. Use only numerals and not “pages” or “pp”
• Cuddy, C. M. (2002). Demystifying APA style. Orthopaedic Nursing, 21(1), 35-42. Retrieved from
http://www.orthopaedicnursing.com
• Book:
• Author (year). Title of book (edition if 2nd or more). Publisher
• Leslie, Ian (2014). Curious. The desire to know and why your future depends on it. Basic Books.
APA FORMAT OF THE REFERENCES AND
CITATIONS
• CITATIONS
• All references listed on the References page must be cited in the body of the paper. Here is how to do it:
• Your sentence (Author, date of publication) or (Author & Author, date of publication), or (Author, Author, Author,
date of publication).
• Citations go inside the period. If you make a direct quote the page number must be included in the citation ( e.g.,
Author, date of publication, page number). For more extensive information please refer to your APA 7 th Edition
Publication and Style Manual.
