Science q3 Lecture 5

This document provides an online science class lecture on weather and climate for grade 9 students. It begins with an opening prayer and attendance check, then defines weather as short-term conditions over hours or days that can change frequently, while climate refers to long-term average conditions over many years that are characterized by temperature, humidity and rainfall patterns. Key factors that affect climate are then discussed, including latitude, altitude, distance to bodies of water, topography, and ocean currents. Examples are provided to distinguish between weather and climate events. The class concludes with thanks and attribution to template sources.

QUARTER 3–LECTURE 5
PRAYER
Our Father
Who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth
As it is in heaven
Prayer
Give us this day
Our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those
Who sin against us, and
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
Amen.

VOCABULARY MATCH
WEATHER
Specific event or condition that happens over a period of
hours or days. For example, heat or cold, wetness or
dryness, calm or storm, clearness or cloudness, a
thunderstorm, a snowstorm, and today’s temperature, all
describe the weather. Weather can change from minute to
minute, hour to hour, day to day and season to season.
Factors Affecting Weather
Temperature
Wind
Snow and Rain
Sunlight and Clouds
CLIMATE
Refers to the long term average weather conditions in
a place over many years. The climate in the
Philippines is tropical and maritime. It is
characterized by relatively high temperature, high
humidity and abundant rainfall. Temperature,
humidity and rainfall or precipitation are the most
important elements of climate.
CLIMATE (TWO MAJOR SEASON)
1. RAINY SEASON
- from June to November

2. DRY SEASON
- from December to May
- The dry season may be subdivided further
into
(a) the cool dry season, from December to
February;
(b) the hot dry season, from March to May.
1. LATITUDE
FACTORS
The specific north to south grid
THAT AFFECT positions on earth ranging from
CLIMATE 0° at the equator to 90° at the
poles. Lower latitudes around
the equator get the most
sunlight, and as latitude
increases temperature
decreases.
2. ALTITUDE
FACTORS
It is the height of an area above sea
THAT AFFECT level. Generally, the higher an area is,
CLIMATE the colder the temperature is.
Temperature usually decreases by 1°C
for every 100 meters in altitude. Snow
can be found on top of a high mountain
even when the weather is warm in the
valleys.
3. DISTANCE TO THE
BODIES OF WATER
FACTORS
Areas that are close to oceans and other large
THAT AFFECT bodies of water tend to have more moderate
CLIMATE climate ranges between seasons.

Oceans heat up and cool down much more

slowly than land. This means that coastal
locations tend to be cooler in summer and
warmer in winter than places inland at the same
latitude and altitude.
4. TOPOGRAPHY
FACTORS
The natural features or arrangement of an area
THAT AFFECT like land. The windward side of mountain ranges
CLIMATE tends to receive more precipitation than the
leeward side.

Prevailing winds or wind direction influences

regional climate including how much
precipitation occurs in relation to mountain
ranges and water bodies.
5. OCEAN CURRENTS
FACTORS
THAT AFFECT Currents tend to warm temperatures of eastern
coastal areas and cool temperatures on the west
CLIMATE coast of continents. Ocean currents are similar
to winds in the atmosphere in that they transfer
significant amounts of heat from Earth’s
equatorial areas to the poles and thus play
important roles in determining the climates of
coastal regions.

Climate

1. The temperature in Metro Manila is 36 degree Celsius.

2. There is a low pressure area in Bicol region.
3. Northern Luzon will experience a rainfall from June to
October.
4. It is very hot outside walking in the street.
5. Philippines will have a dry season through out the year.
