 Subject Title: Creative Nonfiction

 Subject Description: * Focusing on formal elements and writing techniques, including


autobiography and blogging, among others

* The subject introduces the students to the


reading and writing of
Creative Nonfiction as a literary form.

* The subject develops in students skills in


reading , and thinking
critically and creatively, that will help them
to be imaginative readers

 MODULE /Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) – Week 1
 TOPIC- Literary Convention that governs the different genres
 CONTENT STANDARDS- The learner understands the literary conventions that govern the different
genres (e.g. narrative convention of fiction , etc.)
 PERFORMANCE STANDARDS- The learner clearly and coherently uses a chosen element
conventionally identified with a genre for a written output.
 MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES-
1. Analyze the theme and techniques used in a particular text
2. Create samples of the different literary elements based on one’s experience (e.g. metaphor
to describe emotion).

WHAT IS CREATIVE NONFICTION?
 as the genre, simply, succinctly, and
accurately
as “true stories well told.” - Lee Gutkind
 is like jazz music with a mixture of flavors, ideas ,
and techniques, some of which are newly
invented and others as old as Shakespeare’s
writing.
 takes the form of an essay , a journal article , a
research paper, a memoir or a poem; it can be
personal or not or it can be all of these.
“CREATIVE” and “NONFICTION” – describe the form
 Creative
- refers to the use of literary craft, the techniques
that writers use to present nonfiction- factually accurate
prose about real people and events in a compelling vivid ,
dramatic manner.
What’s the goal? – is to make nonfiction stories read
like fiction so that your readers are as enthralled by fact as
they are by fantasy
“The Five R’s of Creative Nonfiction”
- an essay by Lee Gutkind where he identified
FIVE ELEMENTS/ASPECTS OF CREATIVE NONFICTION
1. Creative nonfiction has a “real life “ aspect.
2. Creative nonfiction is based on the writer engaging in personal
“reflection” about what he/she is writing about.
3. Creative nonfiction requires that the writer complete research.
4. The fourth aspect of creative nonfiction is reading.
5. The final element of creative nonfiction is writing.
CREATIVE NONFICTION
 is both true and factual
 can be a personal experience ,significant event, or issue known to man or
society, subject of interest , etc.
