What is Wireless Communication ?

Transmitting voice and data using electromagnetic waves

in open space (atmosphere)

The information from the sender to the receiver is carried

over a well-defined frequency band.

Each Channel has a fixed bandwidth.

Different channels can be used to transmit information in

parallel and independently.

Wireless Communication

Electromagnetic waves
• Travel at speed of light (c = 3x108 m/s)
• Has a frequency (f) and wavelength (l)
»c = f x l
• Higher frequency means higher energy photons
• The higher the energy photon the more
penetrating is the radiation

Why Wireless Communication

• Freedom from wires.

• Mobility

• Global coverage

• Communication can reach where wiring is infeasible or

costly(e.g. hazardous areas, long distances etc.).

• Stay Connected any where any time.

Challenges of wireless communication
system
– High costs for setting the infrastructure
– Security vulnerabilities.
– Efficient use of Finite Radio Spectrum
– Efficient Hardware
• Low power transmitter, receivers
• Low power signal processing tools
– Fading
– Multipath Propagation
– Integrated services
 Voice, data, multimedia over a single network

Challenges of wireless
communication system

• wireless communication is influenced by

 Physical obstructions
 climatic conditions
 Interference from other wireless devices

• Maintaining quality of service over unreliable links

• Network support for user mobility

• Location identification, handover

Types of Wireless
Communication

Easily generated, Omni-directionally travel long

distances, easily penetrate buildings
Used for long distance communication, high
SNR, point to point- line of sight
Short range communication, unable to pass
through solid objects BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus
