Percentage Composition

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1) The chemical formula is Al2(SO4)3 2) The molar mass of Al2(SO4)3 is 342.15 g/mol 3) Mass of Al = 2 x 26.98 g = 53.96 g 4) Mass of S = 3 x 32.08 g = 96.24 g 5) Mass of O = 4 x 16.00 g = 64.00 g 6) Percentage composition of Al = (53.96 g/342.15 g) x 100 = 15.78% 7) Percentage composition of S = (96.24 g/342.15 g) x 100 =

Percentage Composition of a
Compound
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able
to:
1. Determine the percentage composition of a
compound.
2. Solve real-life problems applying the concept of
percentage composition.
3. Appreciate the importance of percentage
composition in daily living by citing its application.
Unlocking of Difficulties
Percentage composition
- is mass percent of each element in the
compound.
% mass of element = x 100

Steps in solving percentage composition

1. Calculate the molar mass of the compound
2. Divide the total mass of each element in the
formula by the molar mass and multiply by 100.
Table salt ( NaCl) is composed of 1 atom of sodium
and 1 atom of chlorine. Given that sodium has an
atomic mass of 22.99g, and chlorine has 35.46g. What
is the percentage composition of sodium chloride?

Step 1: Calculate the molar mass of the compound

Calculate the molar mass of NaCl (Sodium chloride) given
the atomic mass of sodium (Na) = 22.10 g and chlorine (Cl)
= 35.46 g
Solution:
1 Na = 1 x 22.99 g = 22.99 g
1 Cl = 1 x 35.46 g = 35.46 g
58.45 g molar
mass of NaCl
Step 2: Divide the total mass of each element in the
formula by the molar mass and multiply by 100.
Use the formula: % mass of element = (mass of
element in the compound)/(mass of the compound) x
100

Given: the mass of Na in the compound is 22.99 g and

the mass of chlorine is 35.46 g

During pandemic, San Carlos City is placed under Enhanced
Community Quarantine and people are not allowed to go
out causing the volume of vehicles on the street to lessen as
well as the carbon emission. When it is placed into MGCQ,
the volume of vehicles suddenly increases on the street as
well as the carbon emission. As a Carloseňos thinking on the
effect of air pollution towards health, what fuel additive will
you suggest with low carbon content? Why?
• A. Butane – C4H10
• b. Octane – C8H18
