Speaking a language is performing speech acts such
as making statements, giving commands, asking
questions, making remarks, requests and so on, and
more abstractly, acts such as referring and predicating
and that these acts are in general made possible by
and are performed in accordance with certain rules for
the use of linguistic elements. This module will help

requires understanding of speech act to respond
appropriately for effective communication.
Types of
Speech Act
Three Types of Speech Act
According to J. L. Austin (1962), a philosopher of
language and the developer of the Speech Act
Theory, there are three types of acts in every
utterance, given the right circumstances or context.
