Distinction

Between Report
Writing and Other
Types of Writing
2

WHAT IS WRITING?

Writing is a medium of human

communication that involves the
representation of a language with
symbols.
3

TYPES OF
WRITING
4

Narrative Writing

The purpose of narrative writing is to tell a story,

whether that story is real or imaginary. Pieces in a
narrative style will have characters, and through the
narrative, the reader learns what happens to them.
Narrative writing can also include dialogue.
5

Persuasive Writing

The aim of persuasive writing, or argumentation, is to

influence the reader to assume the author’s point of view.
The author will express personal opinions in the piece and
arm him- or herself with evidence so that the reader will
agree with him or her
6

Descriptive Writing

The aim of descriptive writing is to help the reader

visualize, in detail, a character, event, place, or all of these
things at once. The author might describe the scene in terms
of all five senses. Descriptive writing allows the writer a
great deal more artistic freedom than expository writing
does.
7

Expository Writing

Expository writing deals with definition, explanation or

interpretation. It includes writing on science, law,
philosophy, technology, political science, history and
literary criticism. An exposition is a form of logical
presentation. Its primary object is to explain and clarify.
8

Report writing

Report writing is a formal style of writing elaborately on a

topic. The tone of a report is always formal. The important
section to focus on is the target audience. Report Writing is
a systematic writing process that requires skills, researches,
and details. The report writing process is generally a very
time-consuming process and it requires a comprehensive
research.
9

Formal Report Writing

A formal report tends to be longer; although, again, the quantity of

pages or words is not defined. It may start at ten pages and in some
cases exceed one hundred pages. With a formal report, the topic of the
report or the policy of the company it’s being written for determines
which sections, labels, content, and purpose should be used as the basis
for the report.
10

Informal Report Writing

Informal reports tend to be shorter, although the quantity of pages or

words is not defined. Think of informal reports as documents of under
ten pages. An informal report usually has specific topics grouped in
paragraphs, and these topics tend to have simple headings. Note that
while informal reports often don’t have required headings, you can take
inspiration from the headings required in formal reports.
