Nervous System - Harshit Nag

The nervous system is composed of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The brain acts as the control center and receives messages from senses through nerves. The spinal cord extends from the brain and contains the central canal. There are three main types of nerves - sensory, motor, and mixed. The nervous system takes in information, processes it, and triggers reactions to control functions of the body. Proper care includes exercise, rest, diet, and exposure to sunlight.

What is Nervous System

• The nervous system controls everything you do, including breathing,

walking, thinking, and feeling. This system is made up of your brain,
spinal cord, and all the nerves of your body. The brain is the control
center .

The Brain

• Brain is a control centre [Master] of the human body .

• It receives message from all the sense organ of the body through
nerves .
• The human brain is made of million tiny nerve sell and nerve
fibres.

The human brain contains approximately one hundred billion neurons.

Parts of Brain

• Cerebrum: The largest part of the brain and is composed of right and
left hemispheres.
• Cerebellum: It is located under the cerebrum.
• Medulla: It’s also called as brain stem.
The Nerves

• A nerve is an enclosed, cable-like bundle of fibers in the nervous

system.
• A nerve transmits electrical impulses.
• Within a nerve, each axon is surrounded by a layer of connective
tissue .

There are more nerve cells in the human brain than there are stars in the
Milky Way..
Parts of Nerves

• Sensory Nerves : A sensory nerve is really a collection of

long dendrites carrying messages to the central nervous
system from the periphery.
• Motor Nerves : A motor nerve is a nerve located in the
central nervous system , usually the spinal cord, that sends
motor signals from the CNS to the muscles of the body.
• Mixed Nerves : A nerve containing both Sensory and Motor
Fibers.
The Spinal cord

• The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular structure made

up of nervous tissue, which extends from the medulla
oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the
vertebral column. It encloses the central canal of the
spinal cord, which contains cerebrospinal fluid.

When we’re born, our spine contains 33 vertebrae, but most of us end up
with just 26. What happens to them? As you grow older, some of the
vertebrae fuse together and form the sacrum (back of the pelvis) and coccyx
(tailbone).
Parts of Spinal Cord

The Spinal Cord is divided into four

different regions:
• Cervical
• Thoracic
• Lumbar
• Sacral Regions
How Nervous System Works

• The nervous system takes in information through our sense,

processes the information and triggers reactions, such as making
your muscles move or causing you to feel pain.

For example, if you touch a hot plate, you reflexively pull back your
hand and your nerves simultaneously send pain signals to your brain.
How to take care of Nervous System

• Exercise Regularly
• Get Plenty of Rest
• Eat Healthy Food
• Expose Your Body to Sunlight
• Walk Barefoot
• Drink Green Tea
• Eat small meals at regular intervals
