Normal Distribution

The normal distribution is one of the most important continuous probability distributions in statistics. It is also known as the Gaussian distribution, named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. The normal distribution has a bell-shaped curve that is symmetrical around the mean. It has the unique property that the mean, median and mode all coincide at a single point. The total area under the normal curve is equal to 1. The normal distribution can be used to calculate probabilities that a random variable falls within a given interval using z-scores and standard normal distribution tables.

WHAT ARE THE
PROPERTIES OF
NORMAL

DISTRIBUTION?
The probability distribution is
said to be normal if the mean,
median, and mode coincide at a
single point.
• The mean coincides with a line
that divides the normal curve
into parts. It is symmetrical

• The right and left tails are
asymptotic to its horizontal line.
• The total are under the normal

AREAS UNDER THE NORMAL CURVE

When x has a normal

distribution with specified
values of mean and standard
deviation, the probability that
an observed x values falls in
some interval is the area under
the normal curve and above the
interval. (Standard Score or Z-
