Practical Embalming

This document provides information about embalming procedures. It discusses modern embalming as treating a dead body to achieve an antiseptic condition and pre-mortem appearance for preservation. It outlines pre-embalming considerations like diagnosis. It describes criteria for selecting vessels like size, location, and proximity to heart. The main methods of embalming discussed are arterial embalming, where fluid is injected into an artery, and cavity embalming, where cavities are treated directly. Supplemental methods include hypodermic and surface embalming to preserve local areas. Common injection procedures use gravity or electric pumps.

MODERN EMBALMING
 IT IS DEFINED AS THE STUDY AND
SCIENCE OF
TREATING A DEAD HUMAN BODY TO
ACHIEVE AN ANTISEPTIC CONDITION,A
PRE-MORTEM APPEARANCE AND
PRESERVATION.
PRE EMBALMING CONSIDERATION

 No embalmer can really decide what the

procedure should be untill he has made a
thorough study of the case. This study is termed
pre-embalming diagnosis.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF VESSEL
 1. Size of vessel
 2. Depth of location of the vessel
 3. Proximity of the vessel to the heart
CHOICE OF VESSEL
 In infants and children below the 5 year of age –
abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava
 Choice of artery in non-autopsied body –Right
and Left common carotid artery,Femoral artery
and Axillary artery.
 Choice of artery in autopsied body –There are 6
primary injection site-Common carotid
artery,femoral artery,axillary artery.
EXPOSURE AND CANULATION
 Give a suitable incision to open the artery or
vein , incision is made on the anterior wall of the
vessels.
 Types of incision-
1. Transverse incision
2. Longitudinal incision
3. Combined incision
4. Wedge shaped incision
METHODS OF EMBALMING
 1. Arterial embalming
 2. Cavity embalming
ARTERIAL EMBALMING
 In this process the arterial fluid is injected into
the selected artery.
 Blood is drained simultaneously from the suitable
vein to make room for preservative solution.
CAVITY EMBALMING
 In this process the organ in the abdominal and
thoracic cavity are treated with the preservative
solution.
SUPPLEMENTAL METHODS OF EMBALMING
 1. Hypodermic embalming
 2. Surface embalming
HYPODERMIC EMBALMING
 This method is used to preserve the small local
body area or large area by subcutaneous injection
of a suitable chemical.
 Solution injected by hypodermic syringe and
needle ranging from 8 to 19 gauge and varying
lengths.
SURFACE EMBALMING
 In this method the local body areas are preserved
by application of suitable chemical to the surface
of the body.
 In surface embalming packs of cotton or gauge
are soaked in a suitable chemical and applied to
external skin area.
EMBALMING PROCEDURE
 Following methods are common in practice-
1. Gravity injection
2. Electric pump (Air Pressure Machine)
