Local and Global Environmental Issues

The document discusses several local and global environmental issues. It describes how deforestation is one of the country's major problems, with rapid tree cutting causing soil erosion, floods, and wildlife depletion. Deforestation is driven by kaingin farming, illegal logging, and land conversion. Water pollution from domestic garbage causes eutrophication in bodies of water. Air pollution from vehicles and factories contributes to issues like acid rain, global warming, and destruction of coastal resources like coral reefs. Biodiversity loss occurs through genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity reductions. Both natural causes like climate change and human activities such as deforestation, pollution, and coastal destruction impact species extinction.

Environmental
Issues/Problems
SCIENCE 9
SEREFDONITATO
DEFORESTATION
One of the country’s
environmental problems is the
rapid rate at which trees are cut
down.
MAJOR CAUSES OF DEFORESTATIONS
Kaingin farming
Illegal logging
Conversion of agricultural lands to housing
projects
Forest fires
Typhoons
WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCE OF
CUTTING DOWN TREES?
Soil erosion
Floods
Decrease in wildlife resources that will
eventually lead to extinction.
WILDLIFE DEPLETION

 What happens to animal

populations that are driven away
from their natural habitat?
EXTINCT / EXTINCTION

• Occurs when the last member

of the population dies.
ENDANGERED

• On the verge of becoming

extinct.
THREATENED

• Referring to species that are

close to being endangered.
WATER POLLUTION
A major problem in lakes, rivers and ponds is
eutrophication. It happens when the concentration
of organic nutrients that comes from domestic
garbage are thrown in bodies of water, increases
rapidly one of the effects of water pollution.
EUTROPHICATION
• The process by which a body of water
becomes enriched in dissolved nutrients (such
as phosphate) that stimulate the growth of
aquatic plant, life usually resulting in the
depletion of oxygen.
BIOLOGICAL MAGNIFICATION

The buildup of pollutants in

organisms at higher trophic levels in
a food chain.
AIR POLLUTION
What are the major contributors to
air pollution?
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION?

Greenhouse Effect
 The trapping of heat by gases in
the earth’s atmosphere.
GLOBAL WARMING

• An increase in the earth’s temperature

from the rapid buildup of carbon
dioxide and other gases.
DESTRUCTION
OF COASTAL
RESOURCES
Coral Reefs and Coastal
Mangrove forests in the
Philippines serve as breeding
grounds and nurseries of marine
fishes.
Man’s activities that destroys coastal areas.
• Deforestation, and mining activities.
• Dynamite fishing and muro-ami
• Coastal areas’ conversion to beach resorts,
residential areas.
• Overharvesting.
ACID PRECIPITATION
• Commonly known as acid rain.
• Rainwater is normally acidic, because carbon
dioxide is normally present.
• Other pollutants, mostly sulfur and nitrogen
oxides, make rainwater even more acidic.
ACID PRECIPITATION

• Emissions from factories and from

exhaust of motor vehicles are some
examples of pollutants.
PERFORMANCE TASK
Make a multimedia presentation of
a timeline of extinction of
representative microorganisms,
plants, and animals.
THREE TYPES OF BIODIVERSITY

GENETIC DIVERSITY
SPECIES DIVERSITY
ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY
GENETIC DIVERSITY
Pertains to the variation of
genes within species.
GENETIC
DIVERSITY
SPECIES DIVERSITY
Pertains to the variety and
abundance of species within a
region.
SPECIES DIVERSITY
ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY
Is the variation among groups of
organisms in different physical
settings.
ECOSYSTEM
DIVERSITY
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION
 Climate change
 Land Development
 Acid Precipitation (Acid Rain)
 Diseases/Epidemic
 Meteoric impact
 The spread of invasive species
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION

 CLIMATE CHANGE 
The sudden changes in the
earth’s temperature.
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION

 LAND DEVELOPMENT
conversion of land into
residential area or building.
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION

 ACID RAIN  A result of

air Pollution.
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION

DISEASES  infectious
diseases or virulent infectious
diseases cause the change in
biological populations.
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION

METEORIC IMPACT 
Happens when a massive
asteroid or meteor hits the
surface of the earth.
NATURAL CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION

 THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE

SPECIES  it can change the
abundance of diversity or the food
web in an ecosystem by destroying or
replacing its natural number value.
MAN-MADE CAUSES OF SPECIES
EXTINCTION
Deforestation
Pollution
Destruction of Coastal Resources
