Autobiography, BIOGRAPHY
and Memoir

An Introduction
defining autobiography, BIOGRAPHY
and memoir
AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The word autobiography is

derived from three Greek
words meaning 'self' (auto)
'life' (bio) and 'write' (graph).
AUTOBIOGRAPHY
An autobiography is the story of
a person’s life written by that
person. Because the author is
also the main character of the
story, autobiographies are
written in the first person.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The purpose of an autobiography is to

portray the life experiences and
achievements of the author. Therefore,
most autobiographies are typically
written later in the subject’s life
AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Autobiographies usually include

information about where a person
was born and brought up, their
education, career, life experiences, the
challenges they faced, and their key
achievements.
Purpose
An autobiography might be
written for any of the following
reasons:
Purpose
1 To share experiences with people or help make sense of an
experience
2 To entertain or move people's emotions in particular ways
To argue for the relevance of their life story in teaching a
3
larger public lesson.

4
To help define themselves in their own terms, free from
limiting social definitions.
To change people’s attitudes or present a different perspective
5
on a subject.
biography
A biography is a record of someone's life.
To define biography, it may also be helpful
to examine the word's etymology or
origins. The medieval Latin word
biographia comes from the Latin bios,
meaning life, plus graphia, meaning record.
biography
Biographies include details
of key events that shaped
the subject’s life, and
information about their
birthplace, education,
work, and relationships.
biography
The goal of a biography is to take
the reader through the life story
of the person, including their
childhood into adolescence and
teenage years, and then their
early adult life into the rest of
their years.
PURPOSE

The purpose of a
biography is to record
and reveal the subject's
life.
MEMOIR
Memoir comes from the French
word mémoire, meaning memory
or reminiscence. Similar to an
autobiography, a memoir is the
story of a person’s life written by
that person.
MEMOIR

The difference between a memoir

vs. an autobiography is that a
memoir focuses on reflection and
establishing an emotional connection,
rather than simply presenting the
facts about their life.
MEMOIR

A memoir is a nonfiction
story that centers on one event
or period in someone’s life,
rather than a longer period
or their whole life.
MEMOIR
Memoirs often use the same literary
devices as fiction stories and poetry in
order to make them more dynamic
and compelling. As creative
nonfiction, memoirs deal in finer
detail than biographies and
autobiographies.
MEMOIR

Authors attempt to convey their

feelings. It talk about how an
experience changed them.
