Random Sampling

This document contains a Bible verse from Matthew 22:14: "For many are called, but few are chosen." The verse suggests that although many people may be invited or included, only a few will be selected or chosen in the end. The summary conveys the key ideas that the verse refers to many being invited but few ultimately being selected or chosen.

RANDOM SAMPLING
At the end of this lesson:
The learner will be able to
illustrate random sampling.
The population refers to the whole group under
study or investigation. In research, the population does
not always refer to people. It may mean a group
containing elements of anything you want to study, such
as objects, events, organizations, countries, species,
organisms, etc.
A sample is a subset taken from a population, either by random
sampling or by non-random sampling. A sample is a representation
of the population where it is hoped that valid conclusions will be
drawn from the population.
RANDOM SAMPLING
Random sampling is a selection of n
elements derived from the N
population, which is the subject of an
investigation or experiment, where
each point of the sample has an equal
chance of being selected using the
appropriate sampling technique.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
1.Simple Random Sampling (SRS)
2.Systematic Sampling
3.Stratified Random Sampling
4.Cluster or Area Sampling
5.Multi-stage Sampling
Types of Random Sampling Techniques
1.Simple Random Sampling
(SRS) or Lottery sampling
 It is a sampling technique in which each
member of the population has an equal chance
of being selected. An instance of this is when
members of the population have their names
represented by small pieces of paper that are
then randomly mixed and picked out. In the
sample, the members selected will be included.
Can be done through:
• lottery method
• Table of Random Numbers
• the function of a scientific calculator
Types of Random Sampling Techniques
2. SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING
 It is a sampling technique in which members of
the population are listed and samples are selected
at intervals called sample intervals. In this
technique, every nth item in the list will be
selected from a randomly selected starting point.

Formula for Where:

sampling interval: k=sampling interval
N=population size
𝑵 n=Sample size
𝐤=
𝒏
Example .
In a group of 250 students, how will you select a sample
containing 71 students by using the systematic sampling
technique?
1.Prepare a random sampling frame by arranging the 250
students .
2. Assign each student a number from 1 to 250.
3. Find the sampling interval k.

4. Select a number from the whole numbers between 0 and

k+1 by simple random technique.
(1,2,3,4) chosen value is called as the random start.
5. Assume that the randomly selected number is 2. Use 2
as the starting number.
6. Select every 4th student from the sampling frame starting
from the 2nd student.
The numbers of the sample will be 2,6, 10, 14, 18,…
Types of Random Sampling Techniques

3. STRATIFIED RANDOM
SAMPLING

It is a random sampling technique in which

the population is first divided into strata
and then samples are randomly selected
from each stratum.
Types of Random Sampling Techniques

3. STRATIFIED RANDOM
SAMPLING
Example: Using stratified random sampling, select a
sample of 400 students from the population which are
grouped according to the cities they come from. The
table shows the number of students per city.
Types of Random Sampling Techniques

3. STRATIFIED RANDOM
SAMPLING
Solution:To determine the number of students to be taken as
sample from each city, we divide the number of students per
city by total population (N= 28,000) multiply the result by the
total sample size (n= 400).
Types of Random Sampling Techniques
4. CLUSTER OR AREA SAMPLING
It is sometimes referred to as area sampling and applied on
a geographical basis. Generally, first sampling is performed
at higher levels before going down to lower levels. For
example, samples are taken randomly from the provinces
first, followed by cities, municipalities, or barangays, and
then from households.

The difference of cluster from a stratified sampling is that

the sample consist of elements from the selected clusters
only while in the stratified sampling, sample consist of
elements from all the strata.
Example: A researcher wants to determine
who among the families in a small town
are using the new detergent product . How
is she going to do this using the cluster
sampling technique?
Solution:
1. Divide the population into clusters. Use barrios as
clusters.
2. Not all the barrios of the town will be included in the
sample. Choose the final barrios by using either the
simple random sampling or a systematic sampling
technique.
3. Not all the families in each selected barrio will be
included in the study. Select the final families to be
included in the sample by using either a simple random
sampling or systematic random sampling technique.
Types of Random Sampling Techniques
5. MULTI-STAGE SAMPLING
 It uses a combination of different sampling
techniques. For example, when selecting
respondents for a national election survey, we
can use the lottery method first for regions and
cities. We can then use stratified sampling to
determine the number of respondents from
selected areas and clusters.

school. systematic sampling
