Permutation

Here are two permutation problems involving the wristband and rubber band illustrations with their solutions: Problem 1: A wristband has 12 different colored beads that can be arranged. In how many ways can the beads be arranged on the wristband? Solution: This is a permutation problem with repetition. Since there are 12 distinct beads that can be arranged on the wristband, the number of arrangements is 12!. 12! = 479,001,600 ways Therefore, there are 479,001,600 ways the beads can be arranged on the wristband. Problem 2: A rubber band is used to hold 6 charms together. If the order of the charms matters, how

Stimulating Activity

Rearrange the letters of the following words using all the

original letter exactly once. (Anagram)

Example below is the anagram of the word listen.

Find the anagrams of the following words: (body parts)

1.are ear
_________ 5. lamppalm
__________leg finger
2.gel arm
_________ 6. fringe heart
__________
skin lips
3.ram _________ 7. earth __________
4.sink _________ 8. Slip
Question:
Can you determine in how many ways you can arrange the
word 'EAR'? How about the word 'FINGERS'?

List all the possible three-letter arrangement in the word

EAR.
EAR ARE
ERA REA
AER RAE
:

Solution

E A R ---- EAR
R A ---- ERA
---- AER
E R
A
R E ---- ARE
E A ---- REA
R
A E ---- RA E
The tree diagram shows that there are 6 possible
arrangements if 3 letters are to be arranged in a row. Aside
from using the diagram, another alternative method of
determining the number of possible outcomes is by
Fundamental Principle of Counting.

In the first column, there are 3 choices of letters E,

A, R. After choosing one, there were only 2 letters left to
choose from, then one. Thus, 3 x 2 x 1 = 6.
The expression 3 x 2 x 1 can also be written as 3! which is known
as 3 Factorial.

What is Factorial?
Factorial is the product of all positive integers less than or
equal to a given positive integer and denoted by that integer (n)
and an exclamation point. Thus n! is read as n factorial.
Thus, in finding the different arrangement of the word ‘FINGERS’ we
can use the formula P = n!
 Since the letters of the word FINGERS is 7, therefore our n=7.

Solving:

P = n!
P = 7! = 5, 040 ways

ANALYSIS:
1. Did you answer all the questions correctly? If not, then which part did you
find it difficult?
2. Do you want to know the different formulas involving permutation of
objects?
PERMUTATIO
N

A Permutation of the set of objects is an ordered arrangement of the items.

It refers to the different possible arrangements of a set of objects where order
is important. The permutation of r objects taken from a set of n objects is
denoted by these following notations:

Which can be read as “Permutation of n objects taken r at a time”.

where n and r are positive integers and 1 ≤ r ≤ n.
EXAMPLE:

1. The 7 teachers of Santican NHS are to be arranged in a row for picture taking. In
how many ways can we do it?

P = n!
P = 7!
P = 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5, 040 ways
2. How many ways can you arrange 2 letters from the word
SQUARE?
= = = 6 x 5 = 30 ways
Distinguishable permutation refers to the permutations of a set of
objects where some of them are alike. The number of distinguishable
permutations of n objects when p are alike , q are alike , r are alike,
and so on is given by

Distinguishable permutation is also known as Permutation with

Repetition
EXAMPLE:
1. Find the number of permutations of the letters of the word BINALBAGAN.
There are 10 letters of the word. Assuming that the letters are distinct,
there are P(10,10) = 10! Permutations.
However, we have to take into consideration that the 2 B's are alike, 2
N's are alike, and the 3 A's are also alike. The permutation of 2 B's is 2! . The
permutation of 2 N's is 2! .The permutation of 3 A's is 3! .
So, we must divide 10! by 2! 2! 3! In order to eliminate the duplicates.
Thus,
P = = 151 200 permutations
Circular Permutation refers to the different possible
arrangements of objects in a circle. The number of permutations
P, of an n objects around a circle is given by

without lock or clasp

with lock or clasp

The permutation of n objects arranged in a circle with a fixed

reference point is P= n!
EXAMPLE:

1. In how many ways can 7 different colored beads be arranged to form a

necklace.
a. with lock/clasp b. without lock/clasp

o The formula for this is . o The formula for this is .

o Substituting the value of n which is 7, we have o Substituting the value of n which is 7, we have

. .

Therefore, there are 2 520 ways we can arrange Therefore, there are 360 ways we can arrange the 7
the 7 beads in a necklace with a clasp. beads in a necklace without a clasp.
EXAMPLE:

2. In how many ways can 8 different colored beads be

arranged to form a necklace without clasp?

Solution:

=
EXAMPLE:

3. In how many ways can 7 different charms in a bracelet

with clasp be arranged?

Solution: = 2520 ways

EXAMPLE:

4. How many ways can Dominic, Mario, Fred, Mercy,

Paul, Alex and Justine be arranged in circular manner if
there is a post between Paul and Fred

Solution:
5040 ways
Instructions: Solve each problem and answer the questions that follow.

1. How many possible permutations are there in the letters of the word
PHILIPPINES?

2. In how many ways can a group of 6 people be seated around a

table if 2 of them insist on sitting beside each other?

3. Rose is planting 11 colored flowers in a line. In how many ways can

she plant 4 red flowers, 5 yellow flowers, and 2 purple flowers?
