Acid and Bases PH 2022

This document provides information about acids and bases and pH. It defines pH as measuring how acidic or basic a solution is on a scale of 0-14, with values below 7 being acidic and above 7 being basic. Neutral solutions have a pH of 7. Common indicators like litmus paper and phenolphthalein are used to determine if a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral. The document also lists some general properties of acids and bases and provides examples to test in a lab.

Is it an Acid or Base?

7th Grade Science

What is pH???
• pH stands for potential Hydrogen
• 7 is neutral because the Hydrogen and
hydroxyl are equal

__________________________________

HH H H HOH OH OH OH OH
*The greater the Hydrogen (H) the more acidic
*The weaker the hydrogen the more basic (OH)

presence of a base
• colorless chemical

• turns magenta (bright pink) =base

• stays colorless=neutral or acid
