M 117 Project Based and Problem Based ApproachesGROUP 5

The document discusses project-based and problem-based approaches used in education. It defines both approaches, compares their characteristics and goals, and outlines the advantages and disadvantages of each. The key differences are that problem-based approaches focus on solving open-ended problems in small groups, while project-based approaches center around creating a product or performance to demonstrate learning.

I PROBLEM - BASED
APPROACHES
• It is a human learning process that allows primitive
man to survive in his environment.
• It is an instructional method in which students work
in a small groups to gain knowledge and problem –
solving skills.
• “It can have different meanings depending on the
design of instructional method employed and skills
of the lecturer.”(Barrows, 1986).
• “It is a complex mixture of a general teaching
philosophy, learning objectives, goals and faculty
attitudes and values of all which are difficult to
regulate and are often not well – defined in research
reports.” (Vernon and Blake, 1993).

characteristics. Four of them are:

• Learning is driven by
challenging, open - ended
problems.
• Learning is student - centered.

PROJECT - BASED APPROACHES

APPROACHES

• The students lead and the

teacher facilitates.
• The students are driven by
their natural curiosity.
• “It is a strategy for creating
independent thinkers and
learners.” (Bell, 2010).
• It results in a product,
orientation, or a
performance.

PROJECT - BASED
APPROACHES

• “Students drive their own learning

through inquiry as well as work
collaboratively to research and create
projects that reflect their knowledge.”
(Bell, 2010).

I PROJECT - BASED APPROACHES

Goals of Project - Based Approaches:

• Teach academic content knowledge and

skills, and develop deeper understanding.
• Build 21st century success skills such as
critical thinking, problem solving,
communication, collaboration, and
creativity/innovation.
• Help students become aware of their own
academic, personal, and social development.
• Help students gain confidence for meeting
new challenges in school and in life.

B
I PROJECT - BASED APPROACHES

Aims of Project -
Based Approaches:

• It aims to build students' creative

capacity to work through difficult or ill-
structured problems, commonly in small
teams.

4
I PROBLEM - BASED APPROACHES

CHARACTERISTICS OF PROJECT -
BASED APPROACHES:
• It is organized around an open -
ended question or challenge.
• It creates a need to know essential
content and skills.
• It requires inquiry to learn and create
something new.
• It requires 21st Century Skills.
• It incorporates feedback and revision.
• It results in a publicly presented
product or performance.

PROJECT - BASED APPROACHES

Advantages of Project - Based Approaches:

It is because Project Based Learning engages students in learning that is deep and
long-lasting, and inspires for them a love of learning and personal connection to
their academic experience. Some of its advantages are:

• It engages hearts and minds.

• It fosters deeper learning.
• It promotes exposure to adults and careers.
• It has a great sense of purpose.
• It successes skills.
• It rewards teacher relationships.
• It promotes the use of technology and to be creative.
6
PROJECT - BASED APPROACHES

Disadvantage of Project -
Based Approaches:
• Project – Based Approaches usually requires
longer amounts of classroom time and more
teacher preparation, so plan accordingly. If
you generally lecture and lead whole-class
discussions, then PBL learning will probably
seem “messy,” so brace yourself for some
initial angst.
