Voip Technology

VoIP technology allows for the transmission of voice calls over an IP-based data network like the internet rather than traditional circuit-switched phone networks. It works by converting voice signals into digital data packets that can be transmitted over data networks and then reconstructing those packets back into voice signals at the other end of the call. Some benefits of VoIP include lower costs compared to traditional phone service, using an existing internet connection rather than separate phone lines, scalability, and integrated features like voicemail, faxing, and video conferencing. However, VoIP systems are also susceptible to some of the same security issues as other internet-connected devices if not properly protected.

VoIP
A recent application of Internet technology Voice over IP (VoIP): Transmission of voice over Internet VoIP can be understood as simply a transport protocol for carrying voice over any packet network, usually between sites. More accurately, VoIP refers only to the underlying transport protocol that encapsulates voice traffic or voice media streams and allows them to be carried over data.

VoIP Overview
IP Telephony is a process that enables the transfer of voice data over a packet switched network as opposed to the traditional circuit switched network The transmission of voice packets over the Internet Protocol (IP) is known as VoIP and is implemented properly holds the promise of converged networks and unified communications.

Why VoIP?
Free yourself from expensive phone bills with VoIP. VoIP uses your high speed Internet connection to replace your phone lines. You use your normal phone just like you've always done. When you pick up the phone, you hear a dial tone. When someone calls, the phone rings. What's different? Voip includes local, long distance, great features, and more in one low flat fee. All inclusive service, one low monthly fee.

How it works ?
VoIP works just like a regular phone with just one key difference - how the phone call actually gets to your telephone. Instead of using the high priced telephone company's wiring, VoIP routes your phone calls directly to your telephone using your high speed internet connection. You hear a dial tone and make your phone calls just like you've always done. What's changed is that you don't pay a big bill to use the phone company's wires..

H.323 and SIP Protocol

H.323 consists of a set of protocols that are responsible for encoding, decoding, and packetizing audio and video signals, for call signaling and control, as well as for capability exchange. e.g: H .255, H.235, H.245. SIP is an application layer control protocol that can establish, modify and terminate multimedia sessions or calls. It is same as H .323

Security Issues
VoIP telephone systems are susceptible to attacks as are any internet-connected devices. For example: DoS Attack Eavesdropping Attack Routing packets through firewalls and NATs

VoIP Advantages
Low cost Use existing infrastructure Scalability Voice mail and fax applications Call waiting Caller ID 3 way calling Send documents and/or pictures while you talk at the Same time

Summary
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an emerging technology that is a critical component of network centric warfare, and is associated with potential command center, desktop convergence, mobility enhancements, infrastructure reduction, multi-media collaboration, and cost avoidance.
