5. FOOD WALK
1. PLANTATION AND ADOPTION OF TREE :

• As part of this initiative, students were encouraged to form

groups and actively participate in various social activities.

• One such impactful endeavor was a tree-planting activity

at the Bio Centre, located in Hulimavu on Bannerghatta
Road, under the guidance of the Department of
Horticulture.
• We visit unfolded with an exploration of the Bio Centre,
where we gained insights into sustainable practices and the
cultivation of mushrooms. The knowledgeable faculty
imparted valuable information about bio-lifestyles, proper
bio-manure usage.

• We were certified for our visit, having actively participated

in planting a tree and using 5kg of bio-manure to enrich the
soil. The pleasant climate, coupled with the unique and
meticulous care taken for the plants, made this experience
truly memorable
• A Biological Park Mushroom Laboratory, such as the one
visited, serves as a comprehensive facility dedicated to the
cultivation, research, and education about mushrooms.

• This facility involves the cultivation of various mushroom

species, research on their biology and potential uses,
educational programs for visitors, conservation efforts
for rare species, and the production of mushroom-based
products.
• Ensuring temperature control within a biocentre is
paramount for preserving the health and viability of
living organisms, samples, and experiments.

• Several methodologies are employed for this purpose,

including the use of environmental chambers,
incubators, cold storage facilities, and centralized
climate control systems.

• These technologies are complemented by temperature

monitoring and alarm systems, which collectively
contribute to maintaining stable conditions in
laboratory spaces and storage areas.
2. HERITAGE WALK AND CRAFT CORNER :

• As part of our Social Connect & Responsibilities Course,

our group embarked on a meaningful journey to the
Shivagange Hills.

• This activity-based course aimed to foster connections with

fellow human beings, nature, society, and the world at large.

• The Shivagange Hills, with their spiritual significance and

natural beauty, provided a setting for exploration,
introspection, and connection with both nature and
spirituality.
• At the forefront, the hills served as a spiritual
pilgrimage center with an ancient temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva at its summit.

• The activities encompassed historical and

cultural exploration, offering insights into
Karnataka's rich heritage.

• The location, easily accessible from Bangalore,

holds religious significance, with various temples
and structures dotting the landscape.
• The trek itself provided adventure enthusiasts with an
opportunity to climb the series of steps carved into the rocky
hillside, offering breathtaking views of the surroundings.

• The hilltop featured a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva,

along with other structures like the Nandi statue, Patalagange,
and numerous temples and caves.

• The experience of climbing the hill was both adventurous and

challenging, with steep paths and broken steps. While climbing,
we encountered monkeys blocking our way, highlighting the
need for precautions.

• Our encounter with the monkeys added a touch of humor, as we

shared biscuits with them to ensure a safe ascent.
3. ORGANIC FARMING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT:

• Organic farming, a method rooted in natural processes and

techniques, strives to cultivate crops and raise livestock while
minimizing harm to the environment.

• It avoids synthetic inputs like chemical fertilizers, pesticides,

and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), relying instead
on practices such as crop rotation, composting, biological
pest control, and the use of organic fertilizers.

• This method offers numerous benefits, including

environmental sustainability by reducing pollution, soil
degradation, and biodiversity loss.

• It produces healthier food, free from synthetic chemicals, and

improves soil quality through methods like crop rotation and
composting.
• A case study conducted in Hesaraghatta involved surveying
villagers about their practices and knowledge of organic
farming.

• The group focused on areca nut cultivation, gathering

knowledge about organic farming for this common crop in
Bangalore.

• Organic farming also reduces antibiotic use in

livestock, supporting animal welfare and preventing
antibiotic resistance.

• It fosters economic opportunities for small and

family-owned farms, strengthening local communities
and markets.
• Organic farms can establish efficient composting systems for organic waste
generated on the farm, including crop residues, kitchen scraps, and animal
manure.

• Large-scale organic farms can explore anaerobic digestion systems, converting

organic waste into biogas for energy production and nutrient-rich digestate for
soil improvement.

• Implementing closed-loop systems where organic waste from the farm is recycled
back into the agricultural system as compost or biofertilizer reduces the need for
external inputs.

• Integration of waste-to-energy technologies can help convert organic waste into

renewable energy, contributing to farm energy needs while minimizing waste.
• Integrating organic farming with effective waste management is a holistic approach that
aligns with sustainable agriculture principles. It not only enhances the productivity and
resilience of farming systems but also contributes to environmental conservation and the
creation of a more circular and regenerative agricultural model.
4. WATER CONSERVATION :

• Water conservation is a critical practice aimed at using

water more efficiently and minimizing unnecessary waste,
with the goal of ensuring both environmental
sustainability and a steady supply of clean water for
current and future generations.

• This involves various strategies, such as promptly fixing

leaks in pipes and fixtures, installing water-efficient
appliances, adopting water-wise landscaping practices,
and encouraging behavioral changes like shorter showers
and full loads in washing machines and dishwashers.
• The benefits of water conservation extend to the
preservation of natural ecosystems, mitigation of
water scarcity, energy savings, financial savings
through reduced water bills, protection of public
health, resilience to droughts and climate change,
and sustainable agriculture.

• A case study conducted near Hesaraghatta lake

involved surveying the local community, raising
awareness about the importance of water
conservation, and interacting with farmers to
understand their irrigation practices.
• By implementing these strategies and promoting a culture of water conservation,
individuals, communities, and governments can collaborate to preserve this vital
resource and ensure a sustainable and resilient planet for current and future
generations.
5. FOOD WALK:

• On January 10, 2024, the grounds of CSE block at

Acharya Institute of Technology came alive with the
flavors and aromas of Karnataka at the Karunaada
Swadha Food Festival. The event aimed to showcase the
culinary richness of Karnataka's diverse cuisine.

• Karunaada Swadha featured a variety of engaging

activities, including live cooking demonstrations, a
food photography contest, and a "Taste of
Karnataka" challenge where attendees could sample
and vote for their favorite dishes.
• Attendees enjoyed a delightful culinary journey,
discovering the unique tastes of Karnataka.
Participant feedback highlighted the variety of dishes,
the quality of presentations, and the educational
aspect of learning about Karnataka's culinary
heritage.

• The event was well-organized, with efficient

ticketing and crowd management. Challenges,
such as high demand at certain stalls, were
managed effectively, contributing to a positive
experience for both attendees and vendors.

• Karunaada Swadha had a positive impact on the

students of various states, providing a platform
for local businesses also. The festival fostered a
sense of community engagement and cultural
appreciation among the attendees.
• Karunaada Swadha Food Festival at Acharya Institute of Technology successfully
celebrated Karnataka's culinary heritage. The event's blend of delicious dishes and
community engagement made it a memorable and enriching experience for all
participants.
