OBJECTIVES:

At the end of our lesson, you will be able to

.a)Illustrate the permutations of the distinct objects,

b) Use the formula for finding the permutation of n objects

taken r at a time;
c) Solve problems involving permutations.
Consider the following situations
Situation 1. If you are given the letters A, B, C and you are asked to
choose 2 letters from the 3 letters. How many possible arrangements
can be made?
Solution: AB AC BA BC CA CB
Situation 2. Mika, Jak, and Arc were riding a bus and there
were 3 vacant seats in a row. In how many ways can they be
seated?

Solution: MJA MAJ JMA JAM AJM AMJ

PERMUTATION OF OBJECTS

Permutation is an ordered arrangement of

objects, things or events.

Rule no. 1: The number of permutations of n distinct

objects arranged at the same time is given by n! .
P( n, n ) = n! = n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3). . . (3)(2)(1)
Ex.1)Mika, Jak, and Arc were riding a bus and there were 3
vacant seats in a row. In how many ways can they be seated?

Solution: P( 3, 3 ) = 3! =3 X 2 X 1 = 6 ways

Ex.) In how many ways can 4 people arrange

themselves in a row for picture taking?

Solution; P ( 4, 4 ) = 4! = 4 X 3 X 2 X 1 = 24 ways
Rule no. 2: The number of permutations of n objects
taken r at a time is given by
P(n, r)=

Ex. 1) If you are given the letters A, B, C and you are asked
to choose 2 letters from the 3 letters. How many possible
arrangements can be made?

Solution: P(3, 2) = = = = 6 ways

Ex. 2) In a school club, there are 5 possible choices for the
president, a secretary, a treasurer, and an auditor. Assuming
that each of them are qualified for any of these positions, in
how many ways can the 4 officers be elected?

Solution: P(5, 4) = = = = 120 ways

Group Activity. The class will be divided into 4 groups and the
teacher will assign leaders. Each group will be given a problem and
solve it, once you are done then write your solution to the black board
then present it to the class the answer of your assigned problem.
G1) A dress shop owner has 8 new dresses that she wants to display in
the window. If the window has 5 mannequins, in how many ways can
she dress them up?
G2) Suppose that in a certain association, there are 12 elected
members of the Board of Directors. In how many ways can a
president, a vice president, a secretary and a treasurer be selected
from the board?
G3) Eight costumers enter the shop and carry outlet, after
gathering their goods they immediately line – up to pay. In
how many ways can they form their line at the counter?

G4) In how many ways can Aling Rosa arrange 6 potted plants
in a row?
How do you relate the concept of permutation in your
daily living?

Some of the real-life examples of permutation:

combination lock or passwords; phone numbers;
car plate numbers
How are you going to calculate the permutations of n
distinct objects taken r a time?

We can calculate the permutation of n distinct

objects taken r at a time using the formula )
P ( n, r ) = n!
( n – r )!
Quiz. Solve the given problems. Show your solutions.
1) In how many ways can the letters w, x, y, and z be arranged in a
row?
2) How many 4-digit numbers can be formed from the numbers 1,
3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 if repetition of digits is not allowed?
3) Michael received 7 paintings from his boss as a reward for his
good work. He wants to hang it on his wall horizontally. In how
many possible ways can he arrange it all? (Show your solution)

permutation?
