21.

 It started with one, but then many more emerged


in turn. Solemn black figures surfaced from the
sea to stare patiently towards the shoreline, before
vanishing out of sight once again without event.

 “Daddy, daddy, the thing is back!” I peaked my
head around the barn door.
 “What thing?” I said.
 “The thing, the thing! Daddy, the thing!” He
pointed up to the sky. It was hovering, just above
the barn. Swaying a little bit, back and forth, as if
trying to steady itself.
 “Huh?” The lights on the front of the…
contraption started to flash in sequence. Then it
started to buzz a little louder as it powered up, its
blades rotated to a blur. I picked up my son as I
was unsure what its intentions were, whether it
was sentient or not…I didn’t know. The machine
then turned rapidly in position several times in a
clockwise direction, before surging suddenly
upwards into the sky and out of sight in the blink
of an eye.

 As one of only five to be inducted into the New


World Botanical Foundation apprentice scheme,
Jesse waited patiently on her first instructions.
The problem was that she’d been lumped with the
most infamous professor, known for his
unpredictable mood swings, and irregular ways of
thinking. Nevertheless, she was here after being
chosen over so many others, and for that she could
deal with anything.

ideas, but this had to be the one that was going to get us all killed.”
