Homeo

Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that originated in Germany in the late 18th century. It is based on three main principles: like cures like, highly diluted substances may cure illness, and illnesses respond to individualized remedies. Homeopathic remedies are prepared through serial dilution and succussion, a process that proponents believe transfers the healing energy of substances into water or alcohol. Homeopathy is the second most widely used medical system in the world and is legal and regulated in many countries. However, it remains controversial due to a lack of strong scientific evidence that its highly diluted remedies have any health benefits beyond a placebo effect.

Philosophy of Homeopathy

• The vitalistic concept of science claims that all living things possess a subtle energy
beyond their physical and chemical states, and that even inanimate matter may contain
vitality.
• Hahnemann applied this view to both the human body and to seemingly inert
substances from all the kingdoms of matter.
• Thus the vital force of any plant, mineral, or animal could be harnessed to produce a
powerful medicine when “potentized”

Sources from which remedies are derived

• Animal Kingdom: animal products for example venom of snake (Lachesis)

• Plant Kingdom: whole plant or some part for example Avena sativa

• Minerals: Naturally occurring compounds of certain minerals can be diluted to be used

as remedy for instance Ferrum Phosphoricum

• Sarcodes: group of remedies prepared from the secretions, tissues, or organs of healthy
humans for example Oophorinum derived from cow’s ovary

• Nosodes: remedies of inactivated micro-organisms or products of disease for example

tuberculinum made from lungs of a diseased person.
How are they prepared?

• Remedies are made by the process of dilution and succussion.

• Hahnemann established that remedies needed to be diluted to a very great degree to

avoid side-effects. He discovered that the more diluted the remedy, the longer its
action, the deeper its effect, and the fewer doses needed. Because the remedies are
diluted to such a great degree, it is highly unlikely that even a single molecule of the
original substance remains.

• Every round of dilution is followed by succussion i.e. Vigorous shaking.
