LESSON 3
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
There are 4 types of operation of function. These are
the following
• SUM
• DIFFERENCE
• PRODUCT
• QUOTIENT
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
1. Their sum, denoted by f
+ g, is the function
defined by (f + g)(x) = f(x)
+ g(x).
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Example 1:
Given: f(x) = 3x + 4 , g(x) = x − 3, find (f + g)(x) and (f
− g)(x).
SUM
1. f(+g)(x)
= f(x) + g(x)
= 3x + 4 + x − 3
= 4x + 1
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Example 2:
Given: f(x) = 5x - 4 , g(x) = 3x − 7, find (f + g)(x) and (f
− g)(x).
SUM
2. f(+g)(x)
= f(x) + g(x)
= 5x – 4 + 3x − 7
= 8x - 11
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
2. Their difference,
denoted by (f − g), is the
function defined by (f − g)
(x) = f(x) − g(x).
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Examples:
Given: f(x) = 3x + 4 , g(x) = x − 3, find (f + g)(x) and (f
− g)(x).
DIFFERENCE
2. (f − g)(x)
= f(x) − g(x)
= 3x + 4 − (x − 3)
= 3x − x + 3 + 4
= 2x + 7
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Examples:
Given: f(x) = 5x + 6 , g(x) = 3x + 2, find (f + g)(x) and
(f − g)(x).
DIFFERENCE
2. (f − g)(x)
= f(x) − g(x)
= 5x + 6 -(3x + 2)
= 5x + 6 – 3x - 2
= 2x + 4
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
3. Their product, denoted
by f • g, is the function
defined by (f • g)(x) = f(x)
• g(x).
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Examples:
3. Given: f(x) = 2x − 3 , g(x) = x + 1, Find (f • g)(x).
PRODUCT
= (f • g)(x)
= f(x) • (g(x)
= (2x − 3)(x + 1)
= 2x² + 2x − 3x − 3
= = 2x² − x − 3
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Examples:
3. Given: f(x) = 2, g(x) = x - 5, Find (f • g)(x).
PRODUCT
= (f • g)(x)
= f(x) • (g(x)
= 2(x − 5)
= 2x - 10
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
4. Their quotient, denoted
by . is the function
defined by () (x) = ,
whenever g(x) ≠ 0.
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Example 1:
4. Given f(x) = x² − 4 , g(x) = x − 2, Find ()(x).
QUOTIENT
=
=
=
= x+2
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Example 2:
4. Given f(x) = 2x + 10, g(x) = 2, Find ()(x).
QUOTIENT
=
=
=
= x+5
