Emergency Descent

The document provides procedures for conducting an emergency descent of an aircraft. It outlines initializing the descent by turning and pulling the altitude knob and turning the heading knob. It emphasizes notifying ATC and deploying passenger oxygen masks. The checklist details monitoring airspeed, performing ECAM procedures, and following the emergency descent memory items in sequence. Upon reaching a safe altitude, it instructs retracting speed brakes and notifying the cabin crew.

 Notify the cabin crew when the aircraft reaches a safe flight level and when cabin oxygen is no more necessary.

 For further descent:

RESPECT
V/S = - 1000 ft/min MAX
 Reminder:
• When the CAB PRESS is controlled manually in descent, the cabin V/S target is - 300 ft/min
for passengers comfort.
• With no ATC constraint for further descent, this value may be used.

REV13.1
1. ALT KNOB SELECTOR … TURN then PULL BACK

Action on the altitude knob-selector is TURN, then PULL.

If you PULL first, then TURN the altitude knob-selector, the aircraft will not descent.
3. ATC……................…….……..NOTIFY BACK

Transmit the distress message “MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY” on the current frequency.

If no contact with ATC, use one of the appropriate frequencies.

FMA READING BACK

 By reading the FMA, you confirm that the descent is engaged.

 Delayed descent leads to limited oxygen for passengers, increasing hypoxia risk.
6. PAX OXY MASKS ……… MAN ON BACK

 The passenger oxygen masks drop automatically when the cabin altitude exceeds 14000 ft.

 This action confirms that the passenger oxygen masks are released.

 Observe the memo:

SPEED …MAX APPROPRIATE BACK

If no structural damaged suspected:

SPD knob …...…………….…………….. SET MMO/VMO
If structural damage confirmed or suspected (loud bang, high cabin V/S, air flow):
SPD/MACH pb ………….……… PRESS

 When in MACH target, pressing the SPD/MACH pb will revert from MACH to SPEED target,
avoiding any IAS increase during the descent.

 CAUTION:
• Use the flight controls with care, and reduce the speed as appropriate.
• Do not press the SPD/MACH pb when the changeover from MACH to SPEED has been
automatically performed by the FM during the descent.
