Capacitor Voltage Transformer

1) A capacitive voltage transformer (CVT) uses capacitive voltage division to convert high transmission voltages to lower, measurable voltages for metering and protection purposes. 2) It consists of a capacitive voltage divider and an electromagnetic unit. The capacitive voltage divider reduces the voltage which is then further reduced by the electromagnetic unit. 3) It works on the principle of capacitor voltage division. The voltage across the lower capacitor C2 is reduced based on the ratio of C1 and C2. This reduced voltage is then scaled down further by the electromagnetic unit for measurement.

CAPACITOR

VOLTAGE
TRANSFORMER
DEFINITION

Capacitive voltage transformer is a switching device used to

convert high transmission voltage into easily measurable values.
Which are used for
• Metering
• Protective relays
• Tariff meters
CONSTRUCTION

The CVT consists of two parts

1. Capacitive voltage divider (CVD) with the two
capacitances C1and C2
2. The Electromagnetic Unit (EMU) contains an
inductive voltage transformer
OPERATING PRINCIPAL

A Capacitive Voltage transformer works on Capacitor

Voltage Divider principle.
Assume a simple circuit Of CVT Which is connected
Between a line Of 400kv And earth
Therefore phase voltage
(400/1.732 = 230 kV) will be applied.

Therefore
Voltage across the Capacitor C1 = (230×C2)/(C1+C2)
Voltage across the Capacitor C2 = (230×C1)/(C1+C2)
Thus if an Electromagnetic Unit is connected across the C2
then its voltage rating will reduce. The output secondary
voltage will depend on the impedance of EMU unit as
below
Secondary Terminal Voltage = (Zm× Voltage across the
Capacitor C2)/(Z1+Z2+Zm)
Zm = magnetizing Reactance of EMU unit.
Z1 = Primary impedance of EMU unit.
Z2 = Secondary impedance of EMU unit.

To reduce the voltage drop in transformer we use inductor (L).

• EPDM Gasket – ethylene-propylene-diene monomer
• NBR Gasket – Nitrile butadiene rubber
• Non PCB oil refers to transformer oil that contains less
than 50ppm of PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) –
Mineral oil, Synthetic oil
POLLUTION LEVEL REQUIREMENT
CLASSIFICATION

Depend on Creapage distance

1. Light :- 18mm/KV
2. Medium :- 20 mm/KV
3. Heavy :- 25 mm/KV
4. Very heavy :- 31 mm/KV
TESTS PERFORMING IN CVT

1. IR test
2. Winding resistance test
3. Ratio test
4. Ten delta test
TAN DELTA TEST

These tests are carried out to check quality of dielectric

medium (i.e. Capacitance) by measuring the power loss in
that.
Modes of Ten delta
• UST ( Underground specimen test)
• GST-H guard, GST-H ground, GST-L guard, GST-L ground
High ten delta values reasons :-
1. Moisture ingress
2. Degradation
3. Aging
WINDING RESISTANCE TEST

In this test the CVT Secondary winding resistance is

need to measure for checking whether it is proper or not
as per the design and specified by the manufacturer.
Check values
1a-1n
2a-2n
3a-3n
Values comes in ohm
IR TEST

Insulation resistance between CVT primary to secondary

& primary to ground is usually checked by the use of
conventional test instruments at 5 KV Megger for 1 min.
RATIO TEST

• Connect primary to earth for given rated supply

• Then, took multimeter and check in ttb
1a-1n, 2a-2n, 3a-3n
Values compare and check
