Selfies
The Dangers Of Selfies And Examples
• Between 2011 and 2017, there have been 259 reported cases of
death related to selfies. Due to trying to take a nice selfie, people
have risked their lives and even died. These have been from
things such as drowning, falling, automobile incidents etc.
• In November 2017, Wu Yongning, a Chinese daredevil fell 62 feet
to his death after taking a selfie on a skyscraper.
• In March 2014, a 21 year old man got himself electrocuted in
Spain while attempting to take a selfie with his friends atop a
train. He stepped on a wire that, contrary to his friend’s belief was
live. One of his friends were also injured and later hospitalised.
• In August 2014, a Polish couple fell off a cliff after crossing the
safety barrier in order to take a selfie with their children in
Portugal. While the couple died, their two children survived the
incident.
• In June 2016, a 15-year old from the USA accidently shot himself
when taking attempting to take a selfie at his home with his
father’s gun.
• Selfies have a risk of revealing private information about you without your
intention.
• When you take a selfie, cybercriminals can quickly gather your information
and profile you.
Risks Of Selfies • Cybercriminals can get knowledge of things like your credit card, your
behaviour, your preferences etc.
• They can steal your identity, commit a crime and eventually, you can be
before the law for a crime that you didn’t commit.
Negative body image from selfies
• Selfies can decide your day; if the selfie was well
received and got a lot of view you will be happy, while
if the selfie was not well received you would not be in a
good mood.
• Selfies can lower your self esteem and your confidence
if it didn’t go well.
• You can start comparing your selfie with someone
else’s selfie and get into a pointless rivalry.
• You can get mocked for your appearance by people
who view your selfie. This may have a big impact on
you mentally, and it will likely lower your confidence in
yourself.
• I would personally advise for people to be more
careful about when they are taking selfies. This
could be on who you are sending it to etc.
• Don’t get too obsessed with selfies as well as social
media. Too much obsession can lead to your self
esteem getting hampered, if something didn’t go as
well as you thought it would. You should not let
My Advice small things like this destroy your day nor should
you let it ruin your life.
• Finally, don’t go to dangerous places to take a nice
selfie. In the grand scheme of things, that doesn’t
matter much and there is no reason to throw your
life away just do get more followers on social media
platforms.
