Common Rock Forming Minerals

Basalt is a fine-grained volcanic rock that forms from lava cooling rapidly at the Earth's surface, composed mostly of dark minerals. Tuff rock forms from consolidated volcanic ash and debris and is a type of sedimentary rock. Pumice is a very porous volcanic glass that has long been used as an abrasive for cleaning and polishing. Granite is an igneous rock composed primarily of quartz and feldspar that crystallized from cooling magma underground, and its name refers to the grain-like appearance of its visible minerals.

Granite is an igneous rock composed of mostly two
minerals: quartz and feldspar. It is an intrusive rock,
meaning that it crystallized from magma that cooled
far below the Earth's surface. Its name is derived
from the Latin word 'granum,' which means 'grain,' a
reference to the easily-seen minerals in the rock.
