Project Review

This project focuses on recovering acetone from acetone-water mixtures through the design of a solvent recovery system using distillation and absorption. The system includes a distillation column, reboiler, and condenser. While distillation achieves 99% purity, the goal is 99.99% purity. To achieve this, an absorption operation using molecular sieves is introduced after distillation to eliminate remaining moisture and enhance purity. The combined distillation and absorption approach seeks to efficiently recover acetone at high purity levels from various solvent-water combinations.

ABSTRACT:
• The project is focusing on the recovery of acetone from acetone-water mixtures, involving the
design of a solvent recovery system with a distillation column, reboiler, and condenser. A
comparative study between packed and tray columns is conducted, aiming to optimize the recovery
process. Despite distillation showing promising results, achieving the desired 99.99% purity
remains a challenge. To overcome this limitation, an absorption operation, incorporating molecular
sieves, is introduced to eliminate moisture content in the recovered acetone, thereby enhancing
overall purity. The project's scope extends to exploring other solvent-water mixtures, ensuring a
comprehensive understanding and application of recovery techniques. This comprehensive
approach seeks to refine acetone recovery, combining distillation and absorption methods for
efficient and high-purity outcomes across various solvent-water combinations.

Goal:
• Acetone stands out as a costly component, and frequent purchases can
significantly inflate expenses. To address this financial challenge, the
recovery of acetone becomes crucial. While conventional distillation
achieves a commendable 99% purity, certain applications demand a more
stringent 99.99% purity level. In response to this need, our approach
involves the use of molecular sieves in conjunction with distillation. This
innovative combination allows us to tailor the purity of recovered acetone
precisely to the specific requirements of diverse processes. By integrating
molecular sieves into our recovery process, we aim to not only reduce
costs associated with frequent acquisitions but also ensure flexibility in
achieving varying purity standards, optimizing the utility of acetone in
