1.What is organizational behavior (OB)?

 There are 4 main part in this course - Social cognitive

theory explains organizational behavior in terms

 1) environmental, contextual events;

 2) internal cognitive factors;

 3) the dynamics and behaviour management;

 4) outcomes of the organizational behavior itself – how

effectively manage an organization.
What is behavior?
 The cognitive approach emphasizes the positive and freewill aspects
of human behavior and uses concepts such as 1) expectancy, 2)
demand, and 3) intention. Cognition, is the basic unit of the
cognitive framework, can be simply defined as the act of knowing an
item of information. Under this framework, cognitions precede
behavior and constitute input into the person’s thinking, perception,
problem solving, and information processing. Concepts such as
cognitive maps can be used as pictures or visual aids in
comprehending a person’s “understanding of particular, and selective,
elements of the thoughts (rather than thinking) of an individual,
group or organization.”

Let’s start with some cases

 Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Inc., a billion-dollar
cosmetics company, makes a point, saying, “People are
definitely a company’s greatest asset. It doesn’t make any
difference whether the product is cars or cosmetics. A company
is only as good as the people it keeps.”

 Steve Jobs is known for developing innovative products by

hiring the right people for the job and fostering a culture of
hard work and creativity.

Organizations
 When we refer to organizations, we will include examples that may apply
to diverse organizations such as publicly held, for-profit organizations
like Google and American Airlines, privately owned businesses such as S.
C. Johnson & Son Inc. (makers of Windex glass cleaner) and Mars Inc.
(makers of Snickers and M&Ms), and not-for-profit organizations such as
the Sierra Club or Mercy Corps, and nongovernmental organizations
(NGOs) such as Doctors Without Borders and the International Red Cross.

Organizations
 An organization is a consciously coordinated social unit, made up of a
group of people, who work together on common goals on a relatively
continuous basis. Manufacturing and service firms are organizations,
and so are schools, hospitals, military units, retail stores, police
departments, volunteer organizations, start-ups, and local,
provincial, and federal government agencies.
1.What is organizational behavior (OB)?
 Organizational behavior (OB) is defined as the systematic study and
application of knowledge about how individuals and groups act within
the organizations where they work.

 Not fully mixed with Psychology — but we might draw on research

about twins raised apart to understand whether job attitudes are
affected by genetics.
1.What is organizational behavior (OB)?

Terminology
 Paradigm
James Brian Quinn offers the “intelligent enterprise” as new paradigm.
He believes that “the organization of enterprises and effective strategies
will depend more on development and deployment of intellectual resources
than on the management of physical assets.”
