Electricity 1

The document discusses the origins and basic concepts of electricity. It begins by explaining how ancient Greeks discovered electricity through observing amber's ability to attract other materials after being rubbed with fur. It then defines electric charge as a basic property carried by elementary particles that determines how they interact with electric and magnetic fields. Charges can be positive or negative and occur in discrete units. The document also discusses how objects can be charged through friction, conduction, or insulation and explains the purpose of grounding electrical systems for safety.

ELECTRICITY

ORIGIN OF ELECTRICITY
★ Electricity began with
humans’ curiosity for
the ability of amber and
lodestone to attract
other materials.
Lodestone, a
magnetized iron ore.
ORIGIN OF ELECTRICITY
★ Around 600 BC, ancient Greeks
discovered a piece of amber.
★ Ancient Greeks observed that
amber attracted other
materials after it was rubbed
with fur.
★ The Greek word electron,
where the term “electricity
was coined, means “amber”
ELECTRIC CHARGE
Electric charge, basic property of matter carried by some

elementary particles that governs how the particles are

affected by an electric or magnetic field. Electric charge,

which can be positive or negative, occurs in discrete

natural units and is neither created nor destroyed.

PROTONS, ELECTRONS, AND
NEUTRONS
THE SI UNIT FOR CHARGE
★ The SI unit for charge is the
COULOMB, abbreviated as C.
★ The charge of an electron is -1.6 x
10^-19 C.
★ The charge of a proton is 1.6 x 10^-
19 C.
★ The value is designated by small
letter e.
★ Thus, an electron has a charge of -e,
while +e for proton.

HOW COME YOU
ARE NEITHER
ATTRACTED NOR
REPELLED BY
THE OBJECTS
AROUND YOU?
➔ Although the objects around
like ball pen, chair, and table
are made up of atoms, that have
electric charges, they are
neutral.
➔ Meaning, the number of
electrons in an atom is equal to
the number of protons in the
nucleus of an atom.
➔ The total negative
charge is equal to the
total positive charge.
➔ It has overall no
charge.
HOW CAN YOU CHARGE OBJECTS?
➔ Objects can be charged in three ways.
➔ These are through friction, conduction, and insulation.

11
CHARGING BY FRICTION
➔ When you rub a balloon against a piece of
cloth you are charging the object by
friction.
➔ The electrons in the cloth are loosely
arranged causing it to separate and
transfer to the balloon when rubbed
against each other.

12
CHARGING BY FRICTION
➔ WHAT DO YOU
THINK IS THE
CHARGE ON THE
CLOTH AND
BALLOON AFTER
RUBBING THEM
AGAINST EACH
OTHER? 13
CHARGING BY CONDUCTION
➔ When the objects being
charged are in direct
contact with one another,
the process is called
CONDUCTION.

EARTHING OR GROUNDING
★ HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
COME INTO YOUR HOUSE?
★ AND HOW THESE ELECTRICAL
CONNECTIONS REMAIN SAFE?

16
GROUNDING
➔ Grounding provides path for
electric charges to travel to the
earth or ground.
➔ This prevents hazardous voltages
to appear on an equipment.
➔ This ensures that the electrical
connection in your homes are
safe.

17
LIGHTING ROD
★ A lightning rod, simply, is a
rod attached to the top of a
building, connected to the
ground through a wire.
★ The electric charge from
lightning strikes the rod and
the charge is conducted
harmlessly into the ground.
This protects houses from
burning down and people
from electrocution.
18
★ The ground plug is purely
for safety and has no effect
on the proper operation of
an electrical appliance. It
accomplishes two things.
★ First, it assures that the plug
is inserted with the proper
orientation so that the hot
wire of the socket is
connected in a predictable
way to the appliance.
