GATT was established in 1947 with the goal of reducing trade barriers like tariffs and quotas. It held several rounds of negotiations over 47 years. In 1995, the WTO was created to oversee international trade, building on GATT's efforts but expanding into new areas like services, intellectual property, and dispute resolution. The WTO now has 153 member countries and seeks to further liberalize and regulate global trade.
