Basics of Ventilator

This document discusses the basics of ventilators. It defines a ventilator as a breathing apparatus that provides mechanical ventilation by moving air in and out of the lungs. There are two main types: invasive ventilation, which uses an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, and non-invasive ventilation, which delivers oxygen via positive pressure without intubation. The document outlines some indications for ventilator use and describes common modes like CMV, SIMV, and spontaneous modes. Parameters for each mode are also provided.

What Is Ventilator
• A ventilator is a type of breathing apparatus, a class of medical
technology that provides mechanical ventilation by moving breathable
air into and out of the lungs, to deliver breaths to a patient who is
physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently

Types Of Ventilators
There are two types of ventilators

Noninvasive

 Invasive

That provides varying degrees of support.

Difference B/W Invasive &Non-Invasive
Ventilation
• Mechanical or Invasive Ventilation: Invasive ventilation is positive
pressure delivered to the patient's lungs via an endotracheal tube or a
tracheostomy tube.

• Non-invasive ventilation: Involves the delivery of oxygen into the

lungs via positive pressure without the need for endotracheal
intubation e.g. (Bipap, CPAP).

Indication Of Ventilator
G.C.S less then 7/15.

ABG’s

Labs

Cardiac Arrest

Lung Injury

Modes Of Ventilator
• CMV MODE : Continuous Mandatory Ventilation (CMV) is another way to
describe mechanical ventilation where all of the patient's breaths are being
provided by the ventilator.

• Parameter :

1-Resp Rate 2- Tidal Volume

3-PEEP 4- Fio2

Cont………
• SIMV MODE : Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation is a type
of volume control mode of ventilation. With this mode, the ventilator will
deliver a mandatory (set) number of breaths with a set volume while at the
same time allowing spontaneous breaths.
Parameter :

1-Resp Rate 2- Tidal Volume

3-PEEP 4- Fio2 5-Pressure Support

Spontaneous Mode: Spontaneous modes of ventilation allow for a
return of some of the normal physiologic breathing processes.

Parameter :
Pressure Support
PEEP
FIO2
