Permutation of Identical Objects and Circular Permutation

There are 5 chairs arranged in a circle that will be occupied by 5 people (A, B, C, D, E). The number of ways the people can arrange themselves in the chairs is equal to (5-1)! or 4!. Therefore, there are 24 possible circular arrangements of the 5 people around the table.

How many 5-digit numbers can be formed, with no
digit repetition, using the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, if:

a) the first digit is a 5?

Solution:

1 x 4P4 = 1 x 4! = 1 x 24 = 24.
There are 24 five-digit numbers that can be formed from the
digits 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the first digit of which is a 5, as shown
below.
b) the first and last digits are even?

Solution: P x 3P3 = 2! x 3! = 2 x 6 = 12.

2 2

There are 12 5-digit numbers that can be formed from the

digits 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the first and last digits of which
are even, as shown.
In how many ways can four different Algebra books and three
different Geometry books be arranged in a shelf if:

a) the shelf is good for five books only?

Solution: Again, considering the spaces

for the books we have: ▬ ▬ ▬
P
7 5 = 7! = 2,520 ▬ ▬. The space is good for five
(7−5)! books only but there are seven
books to be arranged.
b) two particular books are grouped together?
▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ If two particular books are together, then we
can treat them as one but are permuted, 2P2. The two particular
books that are together, counted as one, and the remaining five
books will be permuted, 6P6. As if we are arranging six books in
the shelf.
Solution:
P
6 6 x P
2 2 = 6! x 2! = 1,440
There are 1,440 distinct arrangements where two particular books
are together.
c) books of the same kind/area are grouped together?
The encircled spaces represent books of the same
kind.
Notice that there are three different spaces on the first
group and four on the second. Further, these
groupings can still be interchanged, which means that
the two groups can be permuted as 2P2, while the
Geometry books can also be permuted as 3P3, and so
with the Algebra books as 4P4.

Solution:
P
4 4 x P
3 3 x P
2 2 = 4! x 3! x 2! = 288
In how many ways can you arrange five (5) people to be
seated in a row?
Solution:
P = 5! = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 120 ways
5 5

Circular Permutations
 arrangements which are circular in nature

Examples:
sitting in a carousel
appetizers in circular tray

color wheel roundtable conference

necklace with different color beads

 circular permutations of n objects around a circle is given by

P = (n – 1)!
Suppose there are five chairs around a table to be occupied by five persons A,
B, C, D, and E, in how many ways can they arrange themselves?

How many person/s will occupy

a seat?
1st seat 1 person
2nd seat 4 persons
3rd seat 3 persons
4th seat 2 persons
5th seat 1 person

We use the computation P = 1 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 4! to know the number of ways five people

can be seated in a roundtable. After simplifying the solution, we conclude that there are 24 ways to
arrange five people in a roundtable.
Ten boy scouts are to be seated around a campfire. How many
ways can they be arranged?
Solution: Given: n = 10
P = (n – 1)!
P = (10 – 1)!
P = 9!
P = 362,880

Therefore, there are 362,880 ways to arrange the ten boy

scouts around a campfire.
Eight people are to be seated at a roundtable. One of them is to
be seated close to the window. How many arrangements are
possible?
Solution: Given: n = 8 Note: If n objects on a circle
are arranged relative to a
P = n! fixed point, then there are n!
permutations even though the
P = 8! objects are on a circle, the
permutations are linear since
P = 40,320 a reference point has been
established.

Therefore, there are 40,320 arrangements possible.

Find the number of ways in which 5 people, Aya, Joan,
Ivy, Dexter, and Leo can sit around a circular table, such that
Leo and Aya always sit next to each other?

Solution: Given: n = 4
Note:
P = (n – 1)!, but as you can see in the
P = (4 – 1)!2! problem, there is a restriction wherein
Leo and Aya want to sit next to each
P = 3!2! other and that is considered as a single
entity. So n = 4 but Leo and Aya has
P = 12 ways their own arrangements and that is 2!.

Therefore, there are 12 ways to arrange the five people if Leo and Aya always sit
next to each other.
