INTRODUCTION
 An adhesive, also known
as glue, cement or paste, is any
non metallic substance applied
to one surface, or both
surfaces, of two separate items
that binds them together and
resists their separation.
PROPERTIES OF ADHESIVES

 IT SHOULD BE IN WET FORM.

 IT SHOULD BE ADHERE TO SURFACE.
 IT SHOULD POSSES SOME STRENGTH.
 IT SHOULD POSSES SOME STABILITY.
 IT SHOULD BE WATER RESISTANT.
 IT SHOULD BE MOIST RESISTANT.
ADVANTAGES OF ADHESIVES

 The adhesives materials allows joint substrates with different geometries, sizes
and composition. With the adhesive we can joint glass, plastics, metals, ceramics .
 The use of adhesive as bonding material does not produce any deformation in the
materials .
 Reduction of noise and vibration.
 Sealing function and protection against corrosion.
 The use of adhesives eliminates the corrosion associated with dissimilar metals
joining with different galvanic potential, such as the joining of steel with
aluminum.
ADSORPTION THEORY

 The adsorption theory or model explains the

phenomenon of adhesion based on concepts such as
contact angle, wet ability and surface tension.
 When the adhesive has a lower surface tension
compared to the substrate surface energy, it is capable
of wetting the surface, generating a contact angle less
than 90 °, thus generating the adhesion between the
adhesive and substrate.
 Against the mechanical model and the model of
diffusion, adsorption model explains the phenomenon
of adhesion without penetration by the adhesive to the
substrate; the adhesion is generated by the contact
between the adhesive and substrate

NATURAL ADHESIVES
 ANIMAL GLUE
 An animal glue is an adhesive that is
created by prolonged boiling of animal
connective tissue.
 These protein colloid glues are formed
through hydrolysis of the collagen
from skins, bones, tendons, and other
tissues, similar to gelatin.
 Animal glues have traditionally been used
in bookbinding, wood joining.
FISH GLUE
 Glue can be extracted from fish by heating the skin
or bones in water.
 The purest form of fish glue, made from the
membrane of the air bladder (swim bladder) of
certain species of fish such as the sturgeon, is also
called isinglass.
 It is obtained in light caramel colour.
 It is good heat resistant.
 It is used where strong, but also elastic bonds are
required. Suited for gluing veneers, to attach
different materials to wood (such as metals, metal
foils).
CASIEN GLUE
 This product is made by dissolving casein, a
protein obtained from milk, in an aqueous
alkaline solvent.
 It is hydrophobic in nature and give fungal
effect.
 Casein also is used to improve the adhering
characteristics of paints and coatings.
 It has a longer drying time (clamp your piece of
work for 2 – 4 hours).
VEGETABLE PROTIEN GLUE
 Based on starch, dextrine.
 Supplied as a powder for mixing with water.
 Low strength.
 Low resistance to water/high temps.
 Used for materials like interior wood, paper,
cardboard.
SYNTHETIC ADHESIVES
 THERMOPLASTIC ADHESIVES
 These types of adhesives may be in the form of a solid
which softens when heated and when cooled will regain
their original form and strength.
 POLYVINYL ACETATE (PVA)
 As an emulsion in water, PVA is sold as an adhesive for
porous materials, particularly wood, paper, and cloth.
 It is the most commonly used wood glue, both as "white
glue" and the yellow "carpenter's glue."
 Uses
 A wood glue PVA is known as 'white glue' and the yellow
as carpenter's glue or PVA glue.
 Paper adhesive.
 In handicrafts.
 An envelope adhesives.
 As wallpaper adhesives.
THERMOSETTING ADHESIVES
These types of adhesives are resins which become solid
through a chemical reaction or by applying heat. Once set
they can not be reformed.
Phenol formaldehyde
This is pressure sensitive type of adhesive.
The adherend surfaces after being coated with this adhesive
is subjected to curing by heat and pressure.
This is available as solid, liquid or impregnated film and
used for bonding wood and metal.
Uses :
Phenolic resins are also used for making exterior plywood
commonly known as WBP (Weather & boil proof) Plywood
because Phenolic resins have no melting point
UREA FORMALDEHYDE

 The most important and most used class of

amino resin adhesives.
 Powder, not boil proof.
 Shelf life :1 year. Pot-life: 3-10 hours.
 Moisture resistant, not susceptible to attack
by micro-organisms.
 Example: cascamite , laminating etc.
 USED :
 Plywood adhesive.
 Particle board adhesive.
MELAMINE FORMALDEHYDE
 A fast setting adhesive specially formulated for
room temperature bonding of porous substrate
to difficult-to-bond synthetic materials such as
melamine surfaces and highly impregnated
papers.
 USES :
 The most used adhesives for exterior and semi
exterior wood panels
 For the preparation and bonding of both low-
and high-pressure paper laminates and overlays.
RESORCINOL-PHENOL
FORMALDEHYDE
 Resin + hardener (catalyst). i.e. Aerodux 185 +
hardener.
 Used in Exterior timber structures, marine, plywood.
 Used externally, it is an antiseptic and disinfectant
 Used in the production of plasticizers.
 Liquid mix with hardener
 Shelf life - indefinite, pot life - 1hr @ 30o C
EPOXY ADHESIVES

 Epoxy adhesives are a major part of the class of

adhesives called "structural adhesives" or
"engineering adhesives".

 These high-performance adhesives are used in

the construction of aircraft, automobiles, bicycles,
boats, golf clubs, skis, snow boards, and other
applications where high strength bonds are
required.
RUBBER
ADHESIVE
Natural rubber is often vulcanized, a process by
which the rubber is heated and sulfur, peroxide
or bisphenol are added to improve resilience
and elasticity, and to prevent it from perishing.
 Tapes are made from mixing rubbery material
with adhesives.
